Find the maximum permissible force P if the allowable displacement at C is 0.25 in.
Assume beam DCB to be rigid. Member ABC is made of steel for which E = 30 × 106 psi.
The cross-sectional area of segment AB is 0.75 𝑖𝑛2 and that of BC is 0.35 𝑖𝑛2 .

In reference to the figure shown, the system shown

in the sketch consists of brass (E = 15 × 103 ksi) rod
AD, 3/4 in. in diameter and 24 in. long, attached
securely to a rigid plate A at one end. A linear spring
with a spring constant k = 100 kips/ft is placed
between rigid plates A and B and a magnesium (E =
6.5 × 103 ksi) tube with outside diameter of 2.0 in.
and inside diameter of 1.75 in. is placed between
rigid plates B and C, the latter being fixed in position
as shown. The brass rod passes freely through the
spring and the tube and through holes in plates B
and C and is hinged to rigid beam EDG at D. If the
largest allowable movement of point G is limited to
1.0 in., determine the maximum permissible
magnitude of P. Neglect possible localized buckling
of the magnesium tube.
