Department of Sociology
Sociology is the study of human social interactions, relationships and institutions. The subject
matter of sociology is diverse that expands, family to the state, caste and social class to the shared
beliefs in culture, from crime to religion and social stability to contemporary change in all societies.
It studies society from personal, societal and global level as the subject has become significant to the
fast emerging social problems and changing social scenario. Students can opt for Sociology as a
subject in BA program which started in 2001. MA in Sociology was introduced in Academic Session
2014-15 and since then sociology has been gaining popularity among students. The department
maintains a departmental library for academic assistance to students. The PG program is a four
semester course including 16 papers with dissertation and Viva Voce. The research areas
undertaken by students for dissertation cover wide range of issues like impact of industrialization
on society and culture, problems of weaker sections, gender and society, women-empowerment,
environmental issues etc. The faculty is regularly engaged in teaching, research work, mentoring
students and participates in academic training programs like FDP, Induction Programs and
Refresher courses to augment their professional skills. Some of the major areas of teaching in MA
program are Sociological Theories, Social Research, Sociology of Environment, Sociology of Crime,
Women and Society, Rural Sociology, Sociology of Religion, Social Psychology, Social Demography
and Urban Sociology. The Department also conducts field visits, and tours for exposure and
experiential learning for students
