HIPPO Analysis
The historical context of this document is The Trail of Tears, a

forced migration of the Cherokee out of their traditional lands in

1836, that happened because of the Manifest Destiny of the

American people to expand west, encouraged by farmers that

wanted more farmland. Lucy Ames Butler was a missionary's

wife, Dr Elizur Butler, who worked with the Native Americans.

They accompanied the Cherokeed on the tragic migration and

Lucy wrote the letters to Drussila Burnap, but her intended

audience was also people willing to listen and people that can

actually help.

Intended Audience

Lucy’s purpose in writing was to talk and share about her

situation. She wanted to show the frustrating problem that was

going on, and was trying to accomplish an impact on the readers

to show that they need help.


Purpose

The author’s point of view in this document was religious. Her

religion affected the document because it reflects on the way she

saw all these people. Lucy’s husband was taking care of the sick

Cherokees, appointed to serve as a Physician, and preaching in

camp. She was worried about her husband because a lot of

people from other companies have died with considerable

sickness. She knew that even when the companies arrive in their

new country, a big part of the emigrants will suffer and die. Lucy

talks about the enormous and problematic oppression that the

Native Americans were passing through, all because of the desire

for wealth and power of the “white man”. Surprisingly John Ross,

the principal Chief of these oppressed Cherokees, thinks

otherwise.

John Ross thought that the Cherokees were not being heard by

the press, and that his people were being ignored, but yet, he had

hope in the United States Government sense of justice, he said

that if the truth is fairly set, people with power could change their

situation, but the response to them was that he must accept the

terms already offered and nothing more favorable would ever be

granted. The letter matches what we talked about “Manifest

Destiny”. Lucy made a reflection about the fact that the Native

Americans couldn't do anything, they were being slaved,

imprisoned and killed, but no one really seemed to care, the

government just wanted more lands and wealth. The Cherokees'

destiny was sealed by the United States Government.
