Rudaali is a 1993 Indian Hindi language movie directed by Kalpana Lajmi and based on a short
story by mahasweta Devi . the movie was set in a rural village in india. The village economy was
shown to be based primilarily on the agricultural sector and animal husbandry. The village is not
connected to the city and was not well devolped.
The movie is fully relevant in today’s context as it addresses ongoing isuees of a caste-based
discrimination. The film depicts ‘Hindu’ dominated society with caste believes which is still true
in todays world. Even after almost 100 years of independence, India was not able to become a
nation that does not have any racism depending upon caste. Through the character of the
protagonist, a Dalit woman who becomes a professional mourner, the film highlights the impact
of these social and religious norms on individual and communities. Movie follows the life of a
woman named Shanchari who is a member of lower caste society and is forced to become a
professional mourner for the upper caste families in the village. The film provides a great
overview of the society where the caste discrimination and oppression are still prevalent.

The film version of ‘’Rudaali” expands upon the theme and characters which provides indepth
exploration of the movie rather than a short film. While the short film focused only on the life
of shanichari, the film provides on the the Social and economical structures of the villages.
in contrast to the other caste relatedmovies, Rudaali stands out for its depiction of lives of
people from lower castes and the manner in which the caste system oppresses them. The
movie makes a compelling and original statement on how religion is utilized to uphold the
status of individuals.
