The Review of To Kill a Mockingbird

I’ve never been to Alabama, but novelist Harper Lee made me feel as if I had been there in the long, hot summer of 1935. It
was the time when a lawyer named Atticus Finch decided to defend an innocent black man accused of a horrible crime. The story of
how the whole town reacted to the trial is told by the lawyer’s daughter, Scout, who remembers exactly what it was like to be eight
years old in 1935, in Maycomb, Alabama.
Scout is the reason I loved this book because her voice rings so clear and true. Not only does she make me see the things
she sees, she makes me feel the things she feels. There’s a lot more going on than just the trial, and Scout tells you all about it.
A man called Boo Radley lives next door. Very few people have ever seen Boo, and Scout and her friends have a lot of fun
telling scary stories about him. The mystery about Boo Radley is just one of the reasons you want to keep turning the pages to find
out what happens in To Kill a Mockingbird.
To Kill a Mockingbird is filled with interesting characters like Dill, and Scout makes them all seem just as
real as the people in your own hometown. Here’s how Scout describes Miss Caroline, who wore a red-striped dress: “She looked and
smelled like a peppermint drop.”
The larger theme of the story is about racial intolerance, but Scout never tries to make it a “lesson”, it’s
simply part of the world she describes. That’s why To Kill a Mockingbird rings true, and why it all seems so real.
Even though the story took place many years ago, you get the idea that parts of it could happen today, in any town where
people distrust and fear each other’s differences.
In a just world an innocent man should be found not guilty. But if you want to know what this particular jury
finally decides and what happens to Scout and Jern and Dill and Boo Radley and the rest of the people who live and breathe in To Kill
a Mockingbird, you’ll have to read the book.

C. Writing

 Social Function :

to criticise / evaluate an art work, event for a public audience.

(untuk memberikan kritik terhadap suatu karya seni, ataupun lainnya untuk khalayak umum).

 Generic Structure :

 Orientation : places the work in its general and particular context, often by comparing it with others of its kind or through
an analog with a non–art object or event. (menempatkan karya yang ditinjau pada konteks umum ataupun khusus, biasanya
dengan membandingkan dengan karya lain yang sejenis atau melalui analogi obyek yang bukan karya seni.)
 Interpretive Recount : summarize the plot and/or providers an account of how the reviewed rendition of the work came into
being.(meringkas alur cerita "jika mereview buku" bagaimana cara penyampaian karya tersebut)
 Evaluation : provides an evaluation of the work and/or its performance or production; is usually recursive.(memberikan
sebuah evaluari karya ataupun penampilan, produksi; evaluasi ini biasanya berulang-ulang)
 Conclusion/Recommendation (Optional):The reviewer summarizes their assessment of the value of the work, and
makes recommendations regarding how others should regard the work.

 Language Features:

1. Using the present tense

2. Focus on specific participants
3. Using adjectives form example like bad, good, valuable, etc.
4. Using long and complex clauses
5. Using metaphor (in Indonesia it’s called Majas/Pengandaian

Example : Mr. Bean's Holiday

Orientation It’s a film produced by Working Title Production entertaining and full of ridiculous views. The film is
starred by the famous funny man Rowan Atkinson.

Interpretative The film told about Mr. Bean’s effort to return a boy who missed his dad because of Bean’s fault. He
Recount was left by his dad in the railway station when Mr. Bean asked him to shoot using a camera. The door was closed
but the man was still outside the train.

Evaluation Every screen showed some funny, ridiculous moment and some beautiful scenery about France. An
interesting moment was when Mr. Bean and the boy tried to call the parent’s phone number. They tried every
number because the last number giving the boy’s father couldn’t be caught by the camera brought by Mr. Bean.
When they didn’t have coins to make a call, the boy begged to a woman and she gave a coin. When Bean tried the
same action, the woman left him.

Conclusion In my opinion, this film is good for laugh. The story is not complicated and easy to understand although
/Recommendation some conversations are in French language. The film is suitable to watch for every ages. But some scenes may be
(Optional) risky for children like when Sabine kissed Mr. Bean’s cheek to thank him and her low cut dress revealed part of
her breasts. The film also shows a view of the beach where Mr. Bean was supposed to go, and there are a lot of
women wearing bikinis. This is not good for teenagers.
