Description
Methyl Ethyl Ketone Peroxide (MEKP) in a mixture of dimethyl phthalate and ester plasticizer. (MEKP)
is principally used as an initiator or “catalyst” for the room temperature cure of unsaturated polyester
and vinyl ester resins.

Storage and Handling
Regulated as an Organic Peroxide, Class 5.2, for storage and handling. Store in original Containers
away from incompatible materials, direct sunlight, flames and all sources of heat. Maximum Storage
Temperature: 38ºC (100ºF). In order to maintain the product’s original manufactured assay in long-term
storage temperature of below 30ºC (86ºF) is strongly recommended.
Avoid direct physical contact. Always wear goggles and impervious gloves when handling peroxides.

Warning ! Organic Peroxide
• Risk of explosion by shock, friction, fire or other sources of ignition may cause
fire.
• Irritation to skin.
4. First Aid Measures
• Inhalation – Move to fresh air, rest, half upright position, loosen clothing.
Remove all contaminated clothing immediately. Wash off with plenty of soap
and water. Seek medical advice if irritation develops. Laureled clothes before
reuse. Rinse immediately and as long as possible with plenty of water. Seek
medical attention immediately.
• Ingestion – Rinse mouth with water. Call a physician immediately.
5. Fire Fighting Measure
• Extinguishing Media – Carbon Dioxide, dry chemical powder, dry sand, water,
foam.
• Special Exposure Hazards Caution – re-ignition may occur. Decomposition
under effect of heating. If involved in fire, it will support combustion. In case of
fire and/or explosion do not breathe apparatus.
• Protective Equipment’s – wear suitable protective clothing. Wear self-
contained breathing apparatus.

Stability & Reactivity

• Stability – SADT (Self Accelerating Decomposition Temperature) is the lowest
temperature at which self-accelerating decomposition may occur with a
substance in the packing as used in transport. A dangerous self-accelerating
decomposition reaction and under certain circumstances, explosion or fire can
be caused by thermal decomposition can cause decomposition at or below the
SADT.
• Conditions to avoid – Avoid temperatures above 25ºC. Avoid temperature
below 10ºC. Avoid shock and friction. Confinement must be avoided.
• Materials to avoid – Avoid contact with rust, iron and copper. Contact with
incompatible materials such as acids, alkalis, heavy metals and reducing
agents will result in hazardous decomposition. Do not mix with peroxide
accelerations. Use only stainless steel 316, PVC, polyethylene or glass-lined
equipment’s.
