WEEK 16: Work and Life Balance in Companies

1. What are the strategies of Glenview Community Services in promoting work-life balance
among their employees? How about the strategies of Royal Bank of Scotland?
According to the company's motto, "recruiting for kindness, training for excellence,"
Glenview's volunteers and employees are its most valuable asset. They work hard to foster
a welcoming, joyful, and inclusive workplace environment that keeps employees engaged.
Glenview Community Services' work-life balance not only improves role effectiveness and
allows for time spent on high-value tasks rather than just busy work, but it also provides
genuine understanding of its people.
Royal Bank of Scotland encourages work-life balance among its employees by offering a
variety of flexible working options such as job sharing, part-time work, and the ability to
work from home. They also provide a variety of benefits such as paid parental leave,
extended vacation time, and flexible work hours.

2. What are the benefits of work-life balance in employees and the company itself?
Work-life balance benefits both men and women, and it is also critical for company
talent retention and organizational effectiveness. Many policies, however, continue to be
based on a model that promotes work role primacy and work-family separation. When
mentoring, bias, or work-life policies that expect women to "fit in" are not reinforced by a
gender-inclusive climate that fits women, they will likely result in negative mechanisms,
such as stereotyping, and they are unlikely to be implemented in ways that lead to career
equality.
Work-life boundaries that are effectively managed can lead to higher employee
engagement, lower turnover, talent attraction, a more diverse workforce, lower health care
and leave costs, and lower absenteeism.

3. Choose three (3) "perks" from the two (2) aforementioned companies that you want to
have in your future career. Justify your answer.
Flexible working arrangements, job sharing, and career development programs are
three benefits that I would like to have in my future career. Flexible working arrangements
would allow me to better manage my time and responsibilities, as well as balance my work
and personal life, whereas job sharing would allow me to collaborate with a colleague and
share the workload. Finally, career development programs would help my professional
growth and development while also allowing me to reach my full potential.
