Pain Management – Back & Neck

Pain Management: Back and Neck

Pain

All of us know Pain as an unpleasant experience felt by our body. It is one of the
mechanisms through which our body communicates with our brain. Unlike other
communication pathways for the senses namely vision, smell, taste, hearing and
touch, the pain pathway is activated in special scenarios. Generally, these special
scenarios include the damage or deterioration of any part of our body. So, pain is
a mechanism that tells our brain about the amount of damage and deterioration
present at any location in our body. The degree of pain is directly proportional to
the amount of damage/deterioration. It is with the help of mechanism of pain
that our brain initiates the repairing of the damage/deterioration caused to our
body.

Pain is also a part of the defense mechanism that ensures safety and protection of
our body.

The damage/deterioration caused to the body may be due to any of the following
reasons:

External Injury: This is caused when the body is subjected to a force that is
greater than its tolerance limit. In this case, the tolerance limit of every person is
not same. Generally, body’s tolerance limits for pain increase with age.

Structural change in tissues: A Tissue is a group of cells. Every cell in our body has
a predefined shape and structure. Sometimes the shape and structure of some of

the cells changes due to various reasons and this causes pain. The most important
reasons for this change are improper usage and aging.

Unless there has been an external injury, the cause for neck and back pain is the
combined action of improper usage and aging of the muscular tissue present in
the neck, shoulders and spine.

Generally the back pain that most of the persons experience is due to the
disturbance in the natural arrangement of the muscles. The natural arrangement
of the muscles is disturbed due to improper usage and aging. The problem is
further increased due to improper sleep routine, unhealthy habits like smoking
and drinking alcohol and less intake of water.

Only in the case of serious injuries, a person may experience back pain due to
sudden and intense load on Neck, Shoulder and Spine.
