Site :
Rails bazaar and karkhana bazaar

Location :
Located near clock tower, Faisalabad, Punjab , Pakistan.
Data Collection
History:
• Old name : Sandal Bar Lyallpur
Faisalabad
• Total area : 4 yards
• In 1865, this area was used for agriculture.
• After that, it served as multi town .
• It’s foundation was laid with mud.
• A clock tower was placed at the centre of 8 bazars
that from a bird eye view look like the the union jack
flag of united kingdom .
• This layout still exists today.
• A water well formally existed at the exact location of
clock tower which was filled with earth.
• The decision to build the clock tower on this spot
was taken by the then jhang deputy commissioner sir
James layyal, whom the city was named after.
• It was said by Gandhi :
“ lyllpurr is the France if subcontinent “
• Quaid e Azam declared :
“ lyllpur as Manchester of Pakistan “
• Naming it as lyllpur was a tribute to James lyall
services rendered in the colonization of rachnna
duaba and lower Chenab valley .
• Later on during the second world war, a network of
canals was laid down to materialize the natural and
agricultural potential of this region to feed the huge
British army .
• In 1930, it was awarded as neat and clean city.
• It severage system was based on small canals that
merged in chiniot bazaar canal.

Development:
• Lyallpur, a beautiful and well planned city was
premerly designed for a population of only 40000
people only.
• Ample space was left for greenary and banyan trees
were specifically murtured around the clock tower.
• Whole development was done in Mughal era.
• The time took its courts and like other cities, lyallpur
continued expanding with the rural population
shifting to this city in search of employment and
better aminites.
• District jail, first building built in 1894 and its
construction time period was 2 years.
• Back in the time, only 2 floors were existed. But now,
there is no limitation of heights of the buildings.
• In September 1977, this multi colored jewel of lower
Chenab was renamed Faisalabad by Pakistan
government in honor of king Faisal of saudia Arabia .
• At the time of it’s creation, it was thinly populated
greenish abode to people. But the time turned it into
a third most populated city of country and in this
process, it lost its greenary .
• Even after it’s renaming, it’s bazaars continued to
serve trade and business purposes as per their
nomenclature.
Present day :
• Main bazaars serve vendors and shopkeepers
and gol bazaars are whole sale points with
relatively cheaper commodities.
• These bazaars cater for business man and
citizens need of garments, medicines, shoes,
sports goods, mobile phone, home appliances,
jewelry, clothes, yarn, food items, fruits,
vegetables, stationery, printing material,
stationary and cooking appliances.
• The business continued flourishing gradually.
Users:
1. Local
Use public transport and their own transport for
moving around, approaching their shops.
2. Visitors and Tourists
Generally use public transport (auto, vans) and
their own transport, moving for shopping, work,
travelling and pleasure.

Problems faced by locals and visitors:

• According to traders, the bazaars are too complex to
be accessible for the pedestrians without any
transport facility
• If a buyer has to park his vehicle almost 3km away
from clock tower ; how could he ever peruse the
colossal labyrinth of streets and shops.
• Not only would this exhaust tourist and locals but it
would also diminish the sales of shops from main
streets.
• Example : One such Towel seller from Rail Bazar
Claimed:
“I Sell only 2 towels since morning, if the buyer has to
come from Padistrain pathways ;I am sure that even one
of mine will not be sold”

Observations :
• This is the best option if the traffic is clear
from circular Bazar because circular Bazar
is connected with all 8 Bazars
• Specifically Rail Bazar occupies the
jewellery shops so the pedestrian
pathways will not secure for the customers
as well as for shopkeepers
• The Historical buildings (mandir,
Gurdwara) in Rail Bazar and Karkhana
Bazar should be rehabilitated and opened
for visitors. So that people can get
historical progress.

Architectural improvements :
• Sitting spots for convince of visitors
• Pedestrian access to and from shops
• Pedestrian access to and from stops
• Suitability of waiting area
• Shelters and seating
• Security and lighting
• Information : timetables, route maps.
• Approach and exist paths for busses
• Drainage and surface markings for bussess
