CHAPTER I

Introduction

Stress is an inevitable part of life and it can have a huge impact on the academic

performance of TVL ( Technical-Vocational-Livelihood ) students. With the demands of

college life, it can be difficult for students to manage their stress levels. This research

paper will explore the effects of stress on students and possible ways to manage it.

TVL students are particularly at risk for experiencing stress due to the demands of

college life. The pressure of classes, exams, and assignments can be overwhelming

and cause students to feel overwhelmed and anxious. The effects of stress on TVL

students can be far-reaching. Stress can lead to a decrease in motivation and

concentration, leading to poor academic performance.

According to Linn and Zeppa, some stress is required for learning in medical

school training. However, analogous stressors may be perceived differently by different

medical students according to their individual characteristics, cultural backgrounds,

coping strategies, and experiences. The main sources of stressors for medical students

have been found to be related to academic, intrapersonal, interpersonal, teaching, and

learning activities as well as social drive and desire.Others actually worry themselves

more than required and affect their health. Stress is considered as negative, behavioral,

physiological process that takes place when the person tries to adapt or compromise

with stressors (Bernstein et al. 2008).

Stressors are the circumstances that disrupt, or threaten to disrupt, individuals, ‟daily

functioning and cause people to make adjustments” (Auerbach and Grambling,19

98).According to Malach, Pines and Keinan (2007) stress as the insight of incongruity

between environmental burden (stressors) and person’s ability to fulfill these demands.

Auerbach & Grambling (1998) regarded any situation that can stimulate any kind of

threat or danger to the well being can be contemplated as stress.

Objectives:

 To investigate the prevalence of stress among TVL students and its impact on their

academic performance.

 To explore the sources of stress that TVL students experience and the coping

strategies they use to manage it.

 To identify the differences in stress levels between TVL students in different

academic years and different courses.

 To analyze the relationship between stress and academic performance in TVL

students.

 To assess the efficacy of stress management interventions in improving academic

performance among TVL students.

 To develop recommendations for mitigating stress among TVL students and

enhancing their academic performance.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The result of this study will then be beneficial to the following individuals.

 Well-being and Mental Health: Academic stress can have a significant impact on the

well-being and mental health of students. High stress levels can lead to anxiety,

depression, burnout, and other psychological issues. By understanding the causes

and potential solutions to academic stress, educators and policymakers can

implement strategies to support the mental well-being of TVL students.

 Academic Performance: Excessive stress can hinder students' academic

performance. When students are overwhelmed by stress, their ability to

concentrate, retain information, and perform well on exams or practical

assessments may be compromised. By addressing and reducing stress levels, it is

likely that students' academic performance will improve, leading to better

educational outcomes.

Overall, investigating possible solutions to academic stress among TVL students is

crucial for promoting their well-being, enhancing academic performance, increasing

retention rates, improving career readiness, and informing educational policies and

interventions. By addressing this issue, we can create a more conducive and supportive

learning environment that allows TVL students to thrive and succeed in their chosen

vocational path
SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

In terms of the elimination of academic stress, it is important to note that complete

elimination may not be feasible. Stress is a natural part of the educational experience to

some extent, and moderate levels can even be beneficial in motivating students.

However, the aim should be to manage stress effectively and minimize its negative

impact. By implementing targeted interventions and support systems, the goal is to

reduce stress levels to a manageable and healthy level, ensuring students' well-being

and optimizing their academic success. It is crucial to recognize that every student is

unique, and different strategies may work for different individuals. Therefore, a

comprehensive approach that combines various interventions, tailored to the specific

needs of TVL- ICT students, is essential. Ongoing research, evaluation, and adaptation

of strategies are necessary to ensure continuous improvement in addressing academic

stress among TVL students.

RESEARCH QUESTIONS

 How does stress affects your academic performance?

 If you rate 1-10 how stress you are right now?

 Did you experience depression?

 How did you manage to find solutions to your stress?

 What kind of activities do you do to cope up with your stress?

 How can you say that the stress has a negative affect to your studies?

STATEMENT OF THE STUDY

This study's findings will contribute to the body of knowledge on academic stress among

TVL ICT students and provide insights into effective interventions to alleviate their

stress levels. The outcomes can inform educational institutions in designing targeted

support programs, enhancing the curriculum, and improving teaching practices to

promote student well-being and academic success. Additionally, the study can aid

policymakers in formulating policies that address the unique challenges faced by TVL

ICT students and foster a supportive learning environment within the field of ICT

education.
Abstract

This thesis examines the impact of stress on student’s academic performance and

stress management among students of Grade-11 TVL-ICT. The main objectives were to

ascertain or identify the extent to which stress affects students academic succes, health

and general lifestyle, as well as to inquire and bring to light measures to counteract the

effects of existing stress in students. A qualitative method was used in gathering and

analysing the data. For this pur- pose, questionnaires were interview five students , who

consisted of Finnish and international students.

The results obtained show the different factors that cause stress among students. The

main cause of stress for students in TVL ICT. In the case of Environmental factors,

worries about the future was the main factor causing stress among students, whereas

class workload was the main element of stress with regard to the Academic factors. In

the category of Personal factors, fi- nancial problems caused most stress to students.

Stress can, however, be managed through the introduction of a stress management

course and engaging in extracur- ricular activities.

CHAPTER II

Review of Related Literature

Stress is a common phenomenon that affects all students in their academic life. It can

be caused by many different factors, including academic expectations, self-imposed

expectations, financial pressures, and time management. These stressors can take an

even greater toll due to the unique nature of the program. The TVL program requires

students to juggle multiple courses, assignments, and exams, while also managing the

demands of full-time work and family responsibilities. The added stress of managing

multiple competing commitments can lead to a decrease in academic performance and

overall wellbeing. In order to ensure success in their academic pursuits, it is important

for TVL students to recognize and manage the stressors they face. This can include

developing effective time management strategies, setting realistic goals, and seeking

support from family, friends, and other resources.

The ability to effectively manage stress can help TVL students to achieve their

academic and career goals. Stress is definitely a big word with even bigger impact,

however this can be dealt with small changes that we bring in our day to day life. Stress

is experienced by managers, financers, government officials, administrators, politicians,

house wives and is most prevalent amongst students nowadays. Stress can result in

depression, anxiety many other conditions. Reddy et al. (2018) in their study concludes

that stream wise difference in stress does exist in students. It is important to deal with

stress at personal, social and institutional level. Remedies such as feedback, yoga, life

skills training, mindfulness, meditation and psychotherapy have been found useful to

deal with stress. To identify the main reason of stress is the key to deal with it.

Professionals can develop tailor made strategies to deal with stress. The integrated well

being of the students is important not only for the individual but for the institute as well.

According to Agolla (2009) stress has become an important topic in academic circles.

Many philosophers have carried out considerable research on stress and concluded

that this topic needs way more attention. Radcliff and Lester (2003) studied the

anticipated stress among final year undergraduate students and acknowledged that

class assignments, not enough guidance, pressure to mingle and to get associated

were the reasons for the stress to build up
