Our presentation is about finding appropriate methodologies for teaching English in the

21st

In order to do that, we'll talk about ½. Then we'll move on to knowing who our students
are and what skills they need.
Finally, we'll talk about how is the classroom nowadays, how should be the teacher and the
c.

So, before we start, do you know? Interests, what they liked to do in their free time?

In fact, the students were different, had different interests and teaching was mainly
based 1/2/3/and there was little or no student involvement. The focus wasn't on
developing cognition but on memorization. I've heard some of you talking, maybe not
today but, of your experiences with french language learning. The truth is that the
focus was on memorizing long lists of vocabulary and texts and there was no room for
oral interaction in the target language.
All these aspects often lead to the belief that students were bad at languages.
These are only some of the ideas Aline will be covering now regarding to the history of
ELT.

Afterwards, some alternative methods emerged, seeking for the perfect way of teaching.
I shall comment briefly on some of them.
First, the TPR, suitable only for beginners, aimed to develop listening comprehension
before production, associate language with action and to reduce stress.
Almost totally contrasting to TPR, The Silent Way, as the name suggests, required the
teacher to stay silent for the most of time, giving the students the opportunity to
develop their autonomy.
Suggestopedia was concerned about the facilitation of memorization. Students were
provided with an L1 translation of the texts so they could understand it before
memorization. Its main goal was to induce the state of relaxation by listening to
background music.
Community Language Learning required that the learners sit on a circle, making
questions or statements (in L1 at beginner level). The teacher, standing outside of that
circle, would translate what had been told. Then the student would repeat it and record
it so all of the students could hear themselves after the class.
Finally, the Natural approach focus on communication in specific situations, reducing
learners stress and anxiety and promoting motivation and self-confidence. The
tendency, as the years went by, was to move from an academic and formal view of
language towards a realistic experimental communicative view. Also, the classes
become more learner centred, i.e., it was required more learner involvement and
autonomy.

The approach more used nowadays is probably Communicative Language Teaching,
maybe due to its eclectic nature. It focus on communicative forms rather than on the
formal structure. It is believed that languages are best learnt to exposure to the
communicative use of language, authentic discourse where errors are inevitable. -

Although CLT is much more likely to work nowadays, I believe it is almost impossible
to talk about the best method, or best way of teaching. The teacher should bear in mind
what influences the foreign language teaching in a given context, to find what’s
appropriate and then act accordingly, in order to achieve success.

The best approach to take into class is thus, a pragmatic eclecticism, which allows the
teacher to adapt his strategies according to different contexts.-

Moving on to another important aspect when trying to appropriate …century, we
believe it's important to know what it's like to be a 21st century student.
And who is a child, a teenager nowadays, what are their interests, the way they like
to work so the teacher can motivate them as students.
We selected a short video to support our point of view, so feel free to comment or
even give any examples that you might know, afterwards.

We found this statement of Henry Kelly interesting for two reasons:
First, it mentions his daughter’s computer, then again the use of technology and, second,
we believe, as said before, that the teacher should know their students and their interests.
__________________________________________________________________________
Regarding the first, there's no doubt students belong to the n. gen. or generation next and
so as the idea seen in the video, kids are in touch with technology as soon as they are
born.

When it comes to the teacher, besides knowing their students, the teacher should be
sensitive to student’s needs, building rapport and at the same pace creating a balanced
relationship between both parts (teacher and students) is required to maintain a
healthy productive and stress- free learning environment.
The teacher should master 21st CS promoting

 TW: Information and communications technology;
 S: citizenship, personal and social responsibility, cross cultural awareness
Vary techniques – pragmatic eclecticism

So as seen in some of the statistics, technology plays an important role so classes should be
1/2(instead of teacher-centred as seen in some of the first methods) /3/4 and focused on a
communicative aspect of language.
Of course this brings some issues, because schools don't always have technology access,
different schools or institutions may prefer different teaching approaches and
practices. They encourage teachers to teach in a certain way, whether to promote small
groups discussion within the class or to “teach to the book” and it's really hard to make
small group instruction with 20 some, 30 students in the same classroom. But, bottom line
is teachers should try to do their best with what they're given.
