Ruby, the Elephant Artist
When Ruby, a 7 month old elephant from Thailand, came to the Phoenix Zoo in 1974, she was
the only elephant at the zoo. Her roommates were some chickens and a goat.
Ruby was very bored. She had no elephants around her. She was given food and everything she
needed, so she had nothing to do. When staff at the zoo saw her scratching in the dirt with a stick, they
had an idea. They gave her a paint brush and some paints.
With just a little bit of help from her trainer, Ruby became a painter with her own style. She
produced many paintings. Her most expensive painting sold for $25,000.
Elephants have the brains to learn how to paint. But, just like people, not all of them have the
interest or talent to turn it into a "career." Ruby was one of the few who did.
Ruby died of an infection in 1998 at the age of 25.
There are very few elephant artists left in North America. In Asia, there are programs trying to develop
elephant artists. Money earned from the sale of their art goes towards protecting wild elephants.

Extinct Turtle Found: Associated Press, September 7, 2009
A forest turtle, thought to be extinct and gone forever, has been discovered in a forest in Myanmar
(sometimes called Burma).
Researchers from the Wildlife Conservation Society found five of the brown and tan spotted turtles
during a survey of wildlife in the Rakhine Yoma Elephant Park.
The discovery makes scientists hopeful that the species can survive. The turtles have disappeared
because hunters have killed them for their use in food and medicine. Scientists tried to breed them in a
reptile zoo, but had no success.
"We are happy and surprised that this rare animal is alive and well in Myanmar. Now we must do what
we can to protect the turtles that remain," said Colin Poole, the Wildlife Conservation Society's director
of Asia programs.

Exercise 28
Global warming refers to the increase of the earth's average temperature due to increasing
amounts of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Scientists agree that the burning of fossil fuels like oil
and coal causes greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide to escape into the air and act like a warm
blanket over the earth. One way to reduce greenhouse gases is to reduce deforestation, the cutting down
of trees. Trees soak up carbon dioxide from the air, so having lots of trees around is good for the
atmosphere.
There are already some changes happening because of global warming. Sea level is rising and
some animals are moving to new homes because their natural habitat is disappearing. If the warming
gets worse, as scientists expect, there may be some kinds of plants and animals that become extinct.
There may be more storms and floods. Due to melting ice caps, sea levels may rise so much that people
have to move away from the coasts. Some areas may become too dry for farming.
39
All humans contribute to global warming by burning fossil fuels when they drive a car, fly in an
airplane, and heat or cool their houses. The best way to help slow down global warming is to put less
carbon into the air by using less fossil fuel - something that is easy to say, but hard to do!
1.Which gas contributes most to global warming?

2.Why would sea levels rise because of global warming?

4. What's the best way to slow down global warning?
a. Work all the air conditioners harder. b. Use more coal.

eggs. Many spiders like to lay their eggs in their webs. The webs help keep the eggs together. Webs help

Raisins
Raisins are dried grapes that have been eaten for thousands of years. Nearly 3,500 years ago, the
first raisins were discovered as grapes that were drying in the sun on a vine. In medieval Europe, raisins
were used as sweeteners, medicine, and even as a form of money!
In America, raisins were first grown after an 1873 heat wave in California destroyed its valuable
grape crop, leaving only dried, wrinkly, but tasty grapes on the vines. Soon, farmers began developing
seedless grapes in California that were thin-skinned and sweet. These grapes would be purposely dried in
the sun and became the popular dark raisin we eat and enjoy today. Later, a golden variety of raisin was
made by treating grapes with a chemical called sulfur dioxide and using special methods to dry them.
114
Today, central California remains the center of the world’s raisin industry, producing nearly 95
percent of the world’s raisins. Its green valleys, sunny climate, and hot temperatures provide the perfect
conditions for grapes that are dried into raisins.

Eddie, the Sea Otter, Plays Basketball
The Oregon Zoo has a basketball star. His name is Eddie and he's a 16 year old sea otter. Sixteen
is old for a sea otter. Like other older animals and people, Eddie has sore joints. The only way to keep
things from getting worse is by exercise. Eddie's legs get exercise from swimming. But how can Eddie
exercise his sore elbows?
The staff at the Oregon Zoo had a good idea. Jenny DeGroot, the sea otter keeper, trained Eddie
to put a ball through a basketball hoop in a pool behind his exhibit area at the zoo. Now, she says, Eddie
is so good, he rarely misses a shot. It’s not a surprise that Eddie is good at shooting hoops. Sea otters in
the wild are very good at using their front limbs.
