Skill 1: Answer main idea questions correctly.

- Use different words: topic, subject, title, primary idea, main idea.
- These questions are all asking what primary point the author is trying to get across in the passage.
- Because the texts are often organized in a traditional manner, the main idea generally can be found in the
beginning of the paragraph.
Always read the title (if there is any) and first sentence of each paragraph, then scan the whole text, to guess what the
text is about.

Skill 2: Recognize the Organization of the ideas.


How the ideas in one paragraph are relate to the ideas in another paragraph.
Read the first sentence of each paragraph and determine how they are correlated.

Skill 3: Answer stated detail questions correctly.


- Ask about one piece of information in the passage rather than the passage as a whole.
- The answer is often given in order.
- Find the keywords and read the sentence.
- The correct answer is often a restatement, not exactly the same.
Skill 4: Find “unstated” details.
- What is not mentioned in the text?

Skill 5: Find pronoun referents.


- Which noun does a pronoun refers; usually, the closest one.

- You have to draw conclusions.

- Guess what comes before (preceding) and after (following)

VOCABULARY
Read the whole sentence.

Skill 8: Find definitions from structural cues.


- sometimes the passage provides information about the meaning of the word.
- There are structural clues to tell you that the definition of a word is included in the passage
Skill 9: Determine meanings from word parts.
