BACHELORS

IN BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING
WHAT IS
BACHELORS IN BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING
The Kesmonds International University's Bachelor in Biomedical
Engineering curriculum is designed to provide broad
knowledge of the physical and engineering sciences and their
application to the solution of biological and medical problems.
The first two years provides a strong grounding in the
physical and chemical sciences, engineering fundamentals,
mathematics, and modern biology. The last two years of the
undergraduate program provide substantial exposure to
fundamentals in biomedical engineering with emphasis on the
integration of principles of biomedical engineering, quantitative
analysis of physiology, and experimental quantification and
measurements of biomedical systems. The common core
biomedical engineering curriculum provides a broad yet solid
foundation in biomedical engineering. The biomedical
engineering program at Kesmonds International University
provide training that is quantitative, emphasizes
problem- solving and design, and treats phenomena from the
molecular to the systems level. Required courses in
mathematics, engineering, and science establish a strong
foundation for biomedical engineering major courses.

The Biomedical Engineering program at Kesmonds

International University offers four streams for students to
customize their degree to their interest area. Students take
common core courses for their second year which prepare them
for specialization in one of four streams of our undergraduate
program. In third year, they focus their studies in one of the
stream Cellular Bioengineering, Biomechanics & Biomaterials,
Biomedical Systems & Signals, or Biomedical Informatics.
Undergraduate Biomedical Engineering students at Kesmonds
International University can choose to complete their depth
requirements in one of 9 biomedical engineering tracks.

- Neural Engineering
- Pre-Health
- Systems Biology
- Tissue Engineering & Regenerative Medicine
- Biomedical Engineering

Biomedical engineering is a broad, interdisciplinary field that

applies the science and technology of engineering to problems
in biology, medicine, and biotechnology. These problems
include the design and analysis of physiologic measuring and
diagnostic systems as well as quantitative analysis and
experimentation directed toward obtaining a clearer
understanding of the human body’s normal and abnormal
functions.

The undergraduate program provides students with integrated

and rigorous training in engineering, mathematics, and the
basic sciences. It incorporates a strong interdisciplinary
component that combines the quantitative aspects of
engineering analysis and design with a range of biology and
physiology, from the molecular and cellular levels to entire
systems and organisms. The program focuses on providing
students with the skills necessary to solve problems that impact
a wide range of economic, environmental, ethical, legal, and
social issues. Virtually all premedical requirements can be
satisfied within this program of study.

Our graduates are well prepared for a variety of careers in the
broad range of areas in engineering, science, healthcare, and
business, as well as for advanced study in engineering, science,
medicine, business, law, or other health-related disciplines.

The Kesmonds International University Biomedical Engineering

curriculum begins with a broad foundation in engineering,
mathematics, chemistry, physics, and biology. Foundational
work is followed by more advanced engineering coursework
and laboratory experiences. During the freshman and
sophomore years, students complete preparatory courses in
mathematics (calculus, differential equations, and linear
algebra), physics, chemistry, and biology. This preparatory work
is complemented by parallel training in programming for
engineers and introductory courses in electric circuits and
engineering mechanics. In the junior year, the foundation is
used to study electronics, physiology, signals, systems, controls,
biomechanics, thermodynamics, probability, statistics, and data
science. The junior year also incorporates two biomedical
measurement laboratory experiences. The senior year includes
the two-semester capstone senior design project. A variety of
advanced electives allow opportunities for specialization in
instrumentation, sensory and neural systems, biomechanics,
signal processing, biomolecular engineering and systems &
synthetic biology.

Learning Outcomes
Graduates of the biomedical engineering BS program will have:
- An ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering
problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and
mathematics.
- An ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions
that meet specified needs with consideration of public health,
safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social,
environmental, and economic factors.

4 www.kesmonds-edu.ac
- An ability to communicate effectively with a range of
audiences.
- An ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities
in engineering situations and make informed judgments, which
must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global,
economic, environmental, and societal contexts.
- An ability to function effectively on a team whose members
together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive
environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives.
- An ability to develop and conduct appropriate
experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineer-
ing judgment to draw conclusions.
- An ability to acquire and apply new knowledge as needed,
using appropriate learning strategies.

Career paths you can take with a Biomedical Engineering

Degree
If you want to combine your love for engineering with the ability
to design life-saving medical products, a career in biomedical
engineering may be your calling. Advances in technology and
the need to care for an aging population make biomedical
engineers one of the most in-demand positions in the country.
Here, we cover some of the most exciting types of jobs in
biomedical engineering:
- Biomaterials Developer

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?
The underpinning philosophy of all assessments is to develop
both your knowledge and skills to enter employment as a
confident manager with a strong base from which to meet your
own aspirations. This requires consideration of your own
personal capabilities as well as looking outward at the business
world. The aim is for you to become an independent and
self- directed lifelong learner. Apart from the formal
assessments there will be an emphasis on self, with personal
assignments and a 5 to 10 pages summary of your
understanding of each course, these assignments cover 50% of
the course evaluation. Tutors will provide feedback on formative
assessments to support your development of good academic
practice. All assessments are rooted in authentic and practical
workplace scenarios to enable the integration of theory and
practice in dynamic `real world work contexts. Exams are kept
to a minimum of 50%. To facilitate learning for all students a
range of assessment methods are used throughout the course,
including: - Business Reports to demonstrate contextual insight
and professional practice; - Project Plans to demonstrate project
planning skills; - Seminar Papers to develop critical analysis
skills; - In-class tests of your knowledge of core concepts in con-
text; - Project Report integrates learning throughout the course
independently applied in practice; Business simulation where
you demonstrate the impact of your strategic decision making.
The focus is on the impact of management education to
management practice and later assessments require greater
complexity and integration through independent study to
support your successful transition into work. This is exemplified
by two units at the dissertation stage: Management Practice
and the Theory into Practice Project.

www.kesmonds-edu.ac 7
These help you to consider your personal and professional
development and the complexity of applying management
education in practice once in employment.
