Sigma Tau Gamma-Beta Alpha Donates 350 Cans for Tiger Food Fight

(COLUMBIA, Mo.)- On Sept. 30, the gentlemen of Sigma Tau Gamma-Beta Alpha Chapter
procured and donated 350 cans of food in honor of Tiger Food Fight, which is an annual service
event that coincides with Mizzou’s Homecoming tradition.

Procuring enough food to donate was a collective effort, seeing as the gentlemen of Beta Alpha
chapter are paired with the ladies of Sigma Kappa and the gentlemen of Phi Kappa Theta and
Sigma Phi Epsilon for this year’s edition of Homecoming. Together, the pairing was able to
collect over 1,600 cans, and the importance of pooling resources together to benefit a higher
cause was lost on nobody.

“It’s important to collaborate with others because the more people you have dedicated to a
cause, the better,” said Garrett Nelson, Beta Alpha’s head Homecoming liaison.

Thanks to Beta Alpha’s efforts along with the rest of the Greek community, the 2022 edition of
Tiger Food Fight saw a record breaking 43,000 cans donated. This follows last year’s rousingly
successful edition, which saw an earth-shattering amount of over 40,000 pounds of food
donated, especially considering that the 2020 edition only saw 11,319 pounds come through.

“Donating canned goods is a great cause. Hunger is a big problem, and these drives can make a
real difference,” Nelson also remarked.

Donations from Tiger Food Fight all benefit the Food Bank for Central and Northeast Missouri.
Food insecurity is a growing problem in Mid-Missouri- according to KOMU, shortages at the
Food Bank have been exacerbated by a lack of large-scale donations and the ending of
pandemic related public food assistance programs. Increased demand from needy households
at food pantries who rely on the Food Bank mean that shelves are often empty, which
prompted an outpouring of support from the Greek community here at the University of
Missouri.
Brayden Crome, one of Beta Alpha’s Homecoming service liaisons, noted that “we were all able
to come together during a time of friendly competition throughout Homecoming. We shattered
the record for the Food Bank and were able to help so many people doing these things, so it’s
impressive that everyone was able to set aside their differences to help a worthy cause.”

Homecoming this year is on the weekend of Oct. 22. The brothers of Sigma Tau Gamma will
also be participating in the Day of Service on Saturday and in the Homecoming blood drive next
week.
