1. BASIC FUNCTIONS
1.1 The OB Ward Staff Nurse will provide quality nursing care for maternal and newborn
patients and will work with other professional staff to provide services that reflect the caring
philosophy of the hospital.
2. PRINCIPAL DUTIES
2.1 CLINICAL:
2.1.1 In the appropriate department, provides direct, professional nursing care to maternal
and newborn patients.
2.1.2 Assists physicians during tests and treatments by preparing equipment and assisting
them.
2.1.3 Evaluates new and existing patients to assess treatment priority, appropriateness,
and/or the need for changes.
2.1.4 Administers prescribed medications, applies sterile dressings, performs
phlebotomy, and monitors vital signs.
2.1.6 May undertake customized nursing treatments to meet the specific demands of a
patient population.
2.1.7 May oversee and guide the work of other nursing and support personnel.
2.1.9 Take part in research use initiatives and put results into practice.
2.1.12 Document problems, nursing assessments, appropriate goals, care provided, care
interventions and patient and family outcomes.
2.1.13 Coordinates all patient and family services with the team.
2.1.15 Respects the particular spiritual and cultural beliefs of the patient and family.
2.1.16 Delivers patient-centered, holistic care across treatment settings to promote quality
of life.
2.1.17 Collaborates with the neonatal unit to care for premature newborns and other
infants with specific needs.
2.2. TEACHING:
2.2.1 Provides assistance, instruction, and education to the patient, family, and caregiver.
2.2.3 Encourages patient/client education and includes the patient and significant persons
in the achievement of health objectives.
3. EDUCATION
3.1 Essential:
Registered Nurse (RN)
No previous experience required
BCLS/ACLS/CPR Certificate
Strong nursing and patient care skills are expected
