General This safety gear is capable of stopping a fully loaded car/cwt in downward direction
actuated at the overspeed governor tripping speed. In case of free fall, the average
deceleration of a fully loaded car/cwt will be between 0.2 ... 1.0 g.
Components

The force produced by the overspeed governor lifts the governor lever which then lifts both
brake wedges through the oblique inner side of the roller cages via actuating mechanism.
Once the brake plates touch the guide rail surface the brake wedges are pulled upwards
building up more and more force induced by the spring assembly until it reaches a
maximum force at the upper stop. This defined force depends on the GKU/GGU and VKN
and can be adjusted by changing the spring setting (set and sealed at the factory). In case
of adjustment in the field, the safety gear must be sealed again.
Brake Actuating
Normal Position; Running Clearance s = 7.25 mm
The brake wedges (1), roller cage (2), sliding jaws (3)
5 and c-spring assembly (4) are in the normal position.
The safety gear is fastened at the top of the safety
gear block (5) to the console. The running clearance
4
between the brake lining and the guide rail should be
7.25 mm. The safety switch is in the neutral position.
3 This means that the safety circuit is closed.

Actuating The actuating mechanism is fastened directly to the car/counterweight yoke. On the car, it is
Mechanism possible to have the governor lever above or below the car.
The actuating mechanism provides the following functionality:
• Triggers the safety switches, therefore interrupting the safety circuit, when the safety
gear brake wedges move towards the guide rails.
• Transforms the speed governor actuation force to the safety gear brake wedges, to
move them to the guide rail until the self actuating of the safety gear is guaranteed.
• Prevents unexpected triggering of the safety gear due to acceleration/deceleration of the
connected governor system masses.

Detail
Console The actuating mechanism is mounted on a console, which is fastened to the car sling. The
lower roller guide shoe is mounted onto the console. Both consoles are available in two
heights for ride quality.
The long duplex console (1400 mm) cannot be used in seismic zones.
Connecting The synchronous triggering of both sides (of all four brake wedges respectively, eight for
Elements and duplex) is given by the connecting shaft. All connecting elements of the AMC depend on
Governor Lever BKS/BGS and HK (governor lever on top).
The lever stopper defines the standby orientation of the mechanism and protects it from
overloading after engagement.
The governor rope is connected to the governor lever. The governor lever may be placed
either front side or backside of the yoke or left/right by turning the whole yoke.
The mounting of the actuating mechanism has to be correct according to the installation
manual. The contact lever itself actuates the electrical safety switch in case of an moving of
a brake wedge, independent of the reason for triggering the brake wedges. The
synchronous triggering of both sides (of all four brake wedges respectively) is given by the
connecting shaft.
Car Configuration The preferred position of the governor lever is in front of the car (1).

Process 1) Select Safety Gear Type, based on GKU, VKN and BFK. This determines the AMC
Overview configuration (Single or Duplex).
2) Select Rope Coupling Position, based on HSG.
3) Select Connecting Elements Position.
Rope Coupling Calculate the required HSG with rope coupling below.
Position HSG [AMC] = SKU + HKZ + HKV + Distance from car bottom yoke lower edge to the under
car rope end connections + 100 mm Reserve + Measurement "B" TW180 (see "Layout" in
K 604371 TW180 TICO).
Abbreviation Description
HSG Depth of well pit
SKU Overtravel of car below
HKZ Height car flooring
HKV Distance from car floor upper edge to bottom yoke lower edge
Glossary
When HSG is pre defined (available from building plan/architect plan available or defined in
elevator specification):
• If HSG [AMC] ≤ defined HSG the rope coupling can be below the car (preferred).
• If HSG [AMC] > defined HSG the rope coupling must be above the car.
When HSG is not provided, the minimum HSG must be determined.
• The following measurements are critical and must be calculated:
• Toe Guard
• Guide Shoe (including console)
• Buffer
• Compensating Rope Tension Device/Compensating Chain Tension Device.
• If HSG [AMC] ≤ the calculated minimum HSG, the governor lever can be below the car
(preferred).
• If HSG [AMC] > the calculated minimum HSG, the governor lever must be above the car.
HSG can be calculated using X 632883, Calculation of HSK and HSG. The governor
lever position is an input value used to calculate the minimum HSG.
