WELCOME
So what’s next?
T
his year couldn’t get any weirder if it tried,
but you don’t need me to tell you that.
What you might like me to tell you is that,
with the cancelling of this year’s major bike shows,
we’re getting the gist most manufacturers are
taking a less time-sensitive approach to launching
their new models. Some brands will be shouting
their box-fresh products from the rooftops by the
time you’re reading this, while others are holding
fire until the start of 2021. Like many, I’m keen to
know exactly what’s set to brighten up our biking
endeavours asap, but there’s something quite
exciting in knowing we’ll be treated to new
launches for several months to come. It’s a bit like
getting a present on your birthday, and then one
every other week for several months. The question
is, what would you want manufacturers to build?
As far as new models go, 2020’s been pretty
decent, with bikes like the new ‘Blade, Z H2 and V4
Streetfighter packing some serious punch. Carl’s
just got back from the launch of Aprilia’s RS660,
which he’s adamant is a machine that’s also
worthy of our wonga, so keep that option in mind.
I’d like to see the introduction of a whole new
Lolz on holz!

to. I reckon it’s got the best visor system on
the market, and with a Pin-Lock fitted there’s
zero chance of fogging up. It’s comfy too,
which might sound a bit petty when talking
about a lid that’s used only for racing, but
I’ve ridden in uncomfortable helmets before
and they rob you of your concentration. I’m
also a fan of the removable liners that mean
you can give the insides of the helmet a
good clean every now and then, or replace
the internal padding if it starts to get a little
sloppy with the fit. I’ve not managed to keep
an NXR in healthy shape for long enough for
padding replacement to be an issue, but it’s
nice to know it’s possible just in case.
You’ve probably got the message by now,
this is an awesome helmet and I’ve already
replaced this one with another NXR. If
you’re after great spec at sensible money,
here’s your winner.

that these have been set up for

ability to switch the ABS off on the rear!

secret that ’Blade’s smashing the ball out
of the park in pretty much every racing
aspect, with it seemingly dominating both
Superbike and Superstock at British level,
and gaining strong momentum at WSBK
in a very short space of time. The British
superbikes have barely been modified
from the standard road bike which is the
biggest revelation. The Honda Racing
team, based in Louth, are running the
bike with a standard swingarm with very
little modification to the engine, making
their current championship domination
all the more impressive, don’t you think?
The new ’Blade appears to be a force to be
reckoned with, and it’s about time too.
Fireblades historically have been
superbikes for the masses; their best
aspects have always been a fantastic
road-focused chassis, usable power and
comfort your grandad would appreciate,
irrespective of how immobile he is
through arthritis. Honda aren’t daft,
they’ve maintained consistent ‘touch
points’ throughout the years so that when
you hop on their latest model, it feels like
putting on a pair of old slippers but with
a shiny new finish in the latest
modifications. This keeps the brand-loyal
customers upgrading and buying the
latest offering, hence Honda typically top
the UK’s new sportsbike registrations.
The sad reality is, you can only dress the
same blow-up doll in so many different
sets of lingerie before you have to accept
it’s always just going to be that same sack
of wind, incapable of competing with the
real thing. Honda know that in terms of a
road bike they were ticking all the boxes
for what the average 1000cc sportsbike
rider wants, but on the track they were
getting left behind while other
manufacturers were banging out 200bhp
monsters with tech more complex than
the Space X rocket. Honda had to do
something about it, and this latest
fire-breather is just that. But at what
price had the ’Blade’s new-found track
dominance come? The only way to find
out was to put the latest ’Blade to the test
against the preceding CBR1000RR SP2. As
well as casting my opinion, to give an
owner’s perspective of the new wing-
adorned toy I enlisted the help and
opinion of multiple Fireblade owner
Adam Jones, who’s been a ’Blade addict
since 2012. He started with purchasing
the anniversary edition, and has
upgraded his bike to the newer model at
every opportunity since. He’s currently
proudly riding the best of Honda’s last
model – the Fireblade SP2. And after
some road miles, we’re keen to see
whether he wants more Rs in his garage
and will take the plunge to chop his
old(ish) beast in for the new track-
focused beauty, or whether – new bike
and fancy latest registration plate aside
– he prefers the previous model.

he first things that struck me about position – leaving you in no doubt that

The power is linear and doesn’t pack the
same aggressive top-end punch, which
although isn’t quite as exciting as the new
’Blade, it does mean that you feel like you
can use it without fear of it grabbing you by
your testes and giving them an uninvited
twist. Unsurprisingly you won’t be shocked
to know that the older Honda is comfier; the
pegs are way lower and the ’bars are higher.
What will surprise you though is how flighty
the front end is on the SP2. I hadn’t
necessarily noticed it until back-to-backing it
with the new bike, and perhaps it speaks
volumes in terms of development on the new
model rather than being a reflection on
what’s come before it.

After riding the RR-R SP, the SP2 didn’t on a BMX after riding a full-suspension on the lever for the ABS system to kick in,

coolers and LighTech brake lever and remote adjuster. Over winter

and good friend Aaron Edwards got stopped by the local plod
