Written Assignment Unit 5

Trace how Carthage became almost the equal of Rome. Be sure to show the strength of
both and how this conflict led to Rome becoming a naval power.

Introduction

Carthage was an empire with wealth enlarged by its commercial muscle. The
powerhouse at one time became an equal to Rome. With its arrogance, it led an
assault against Rome which was to become a naval power. How would we
compare these two powerhouses as equal at some point?

If we compared Carthage and Rome they were both strong empires in their own
right. Rome stood out as organised while Carthage was wealthier. Carthage’s navy,
was not to be compared to the Roman capable army of loyal soldiers. Carthage’
leadership was insightful, while Rome had the loyalty of its citizens. It had its
strengths anchored on Roman citizen’s patriotism. While the strength of Carthage
was in their commercial resources and wealth (Morey, 1901).

In conclusion Carthage and Rome had similar kinds of government as the Roman
republic. The only issue was that the Carthaginians did not incorporate their
poplars into their political and government organization. This did not gain them the
loyalty of their citizens compared to Rome’s success in that matter. The greatest
advantage of Carthage army was that it was led by perpetual leader, while the
unreliable civil magistrates of Rome controlled the Rome’s army (Morey, 1901).
