Subjunctive

* The subjunctive in English is the simple form of the verb when used after certain verbs indicating that
one person wants another person to do something. The word ‘that’ must appear in subjunctive
sentences. If it is omitted, most of the verbs are followed by the infinitive.
Example:
a) We urge that he leave now.
b) We urge him to leave now.

* Here are some of the verbs that are followed by the subjunctive.
advise demand prefer require
ask insist propose stipulate
command move recommend suggest
decree order request urge

* The following rule is used with the verbs above.

subject + verb (any tense) + that + subject + verb (in simple form)

Examples:
a) The judge insisted that the jury return a verdict immediately.
b) The university requires that all its students take this course.
c) The doctor suggested that he stop smoking.
