APPROVAL, THIS RISK ASSESSMENT HAS BEEN PREPARED FOR TANKS

 Is the safe working pressure displayed on the pot?

 Have all pressure hoses, whip-checks and hose connectors been fitted correctly and inspected?
 Is a dead man’s handle fitted and functioning on the blast nozzle?
 Has the compressor and blasting pot been matched to prevent over pressurisation?
 Is there a functioning working pressure indicating gauge on the compressor?
 Are knock out pots (moisture separators) attached to the blast pot?
 Compressors must be equipped with suitable in-line, air-purifying sorbent.
 Where compressors are used for supplying air, the compressor must be constructed and situated so contaminated air cannot enter the air-supply
system.
 The location of the air intake is very important, and must be in an uncontaminated area where exhaust gases from nearby vehicles, and the internal
combustion engine that is powering the compressor itself.
 Is the work area free of slips, trips and falls?  e.g. are ground conditions good underfoot and work area flooring material suitable is spent grit cleaned
away regularly?
 Have noise assessments been undertaken and the control measures been implemented? e.g. warning signs and exclusion zones established?
 Do the blaster and pot man have effective means of communication?
 Is the grit being used silica free, and stored correctly to avoid becoming damp?
 Are first aid and emergency arrangements in place and equipment available to deal with an incident?
Additional questions for the blasting activity:
If blasting takes place inside the tank when the roof is on, this will then become a confined space. Low voltage lighting and adequate levels of illumination
within the tank.

Painting Works
Additional factors for consideration / risk assessment will be the painting work inside the tank once the roof is on i.e, air fed masks for painters, Atex (explosion

proof lighting) and communication / rescue plan etc.

The following Control Measure is incorrect:
 Use personnel H2S monitor for individuals in brownfield works. NOTE: Please revise to state that multi-gas meters shall be used.

Handling, storage and transportation of pressurized gas cylinders
The following Control Measure is incorrect:
 Conduct leak test with soap solution and ensure no leaks. NOTE: soap solution is now recognized as a potential fire hazard, due to the presence of
animal fats within most soaps. The current industry best practice is to use gas leak detection sprays.
