Project: Fashion Targets Breast Cancer

Introduction
The concept behind my graduation project, "Fashion Targets Breast Cancer," goes beyond creating
classy and bold-looking outfits. It is a deeply personal story of my journey from childhood to
adulthood, marked by courage, emotional turmoil, and a profound connection with my mother. My
mother has battled breast cancer for a long time, and although I was too young to fully comprehend
the situation, the impact of her illness was felt deeply. Witnessing her strength deteriorate was
heartbreaking, and it became a defining moment for me, as I am incredibly attached to my mother.
The weight of the situation was difficult to bear, and even now, the emotions surrounding it are
overwhelming.

My mother never allowed me to be consumed by sadness, always displaying resilience and

maintaining a positive outlook. Her strength and unwavering confidence in dealing with breast
cancer inspired me to face the situation with bravery and maturity. Thus, I have chosen to make
this personal narrative the focal point of my project, with the intention of designing clothes
specifically for breast cancer patients, empowering them to feel bolder and more confident when
wearing the outfits. Now, I am determined to channel these emotions into something special for
my graduation project.

The study aims to depict the emotional turmoil experienced by a child deeply attached to loved
ones. It will be presented as a transformative journey, transitioning from raw emotions to a fashion
collection. The primary message is to stay strong in the face of breast cancer, embracing a positive
outlook and smiling through the challenges. Additionally, the collection seeks to convey the
emotional attachment between a child and her mother, spanning from childhood to adulthood,
encompassing feelings of sadness, anger, and happiness. It is an homage to my mother's strength,
confidence, and fearlessness in the face of nature's trials.

In terms of methodology, the collection will primarily utilize cotton, silk, and rayon fabrics. These
fabrics will be manipulated to impart a firm yet soft, soothing, and confident look, featuring both
matte and glossy textures. The designs will encompass a range of lengths, from short to mid-length
and long, and will incorporate purple, pink, and faded color palettes to match the tone of cancer
cells. The outfits will serve as a portrayal of the emotional balance and turmoil experienced by
cancer patients.

The design and conceptual planning of the fashion collection will center around portraying the
emotions of strength, positivity, happiness, and confidence in the face of breast cancer. The color
palette will reflect these emotions, showcasing shades of purple, pink, and faded colors, along with
bright creamy and matte finishes. Contrasting elements of dark and vibrant colors will be
incorporated to symbolize both sadness and happiness.

Through this project, I aim to honor my mother's resilience while shedding light on the emotional
journey of individuals affected by breast cancer. By merging fashion and emotions, I hope to create
a collection that uplifts and empowers those battling the disease, reminding them that they are
strong, beautiful, and supported.

Visual Research

Fashioning Cancer: The Correlation between Destruction and Beauty, topic was exhibited
presented by Jacqueline Firkins, a member of the Department of Theatre and Film at the University
of British Columbia. This exhibition showcases ten ball gowns inspired by microscopic photos of
cancer cells and cellular systems, aiming to initiate discussions about the connection between
beauty, body image, and the disease. The images used as inspiration were captured by Dr. Christian
C G Naus, a professor in the Department of Cellular and Physiological Sciences, along with his
colleagues. Each gown represents a different aspect of cancer, such as a brain tumor or injured
brain tissue, mirroring the colors and patterns observed in the microscopic images. The collection
offers an alternative perspective to the typical fashion associated with cancer, diverging from the
conventional pink ribbon symbolism. Some dresses in the exhibition interpret the body's intricate
biology artistically, featuring elements like green silk charmeuse and blue rose appliques to
represent nuclei. The exhibition seeks to create a deeper connection with women who have
experienced cancer, portraying strength, beauty, and resilience. Jacqueline Firkins intends to find
a sponsor and venue to auction off the dresses, with the proceeds benefiting cancer research,
patients, and survivors.

Emirati culture. This report further will delve into the theme of the collection and highlight three
standout outfits that embody its essence.

The collection's theme revolves around the mesmerizing concept of cosmic waves, symbolizing
the ever-changing and infinite nature of the universe. Drawing inspiration from the futuristic
visions showcased at the Museum of the Future, as well as the rich cultural heritage of the
Emirates, this collection seamlessly merges the boundaries between art, fashion, and cosmic
wonders.

Outfit 1: The Eye of the Future

The first ensemble features a fitted metallic short princess seam dress as its foundation. This dress
accentuates the wearer's figure while exuding a futuristic allure. Layered on top is a sheer kaftan
made of holographic fabric, creating an ethereal and otherworldly effect. To cinch the waist, a
pleated belt adds a touch of elegance and defines the silhouette.

Outfit 2: The Confidence Suit

The second outfit embodies the collection's theme through an innovative take on a traditional suit.
A striking blue suit is tailored with an asymmetric shape, featuring a big pleated an unusual collar
on one side. This design element adds a sense of dynamism and playfulness to the ensemble. The
suit is paired with fitted pants that reach the knee and subtly flare from knee, creating a modern
and sophisticated silhouette.

Outfit 3: The Cosmic Waves

The third ensemble combines elements of sensuality, structure, and texture. A blue inner dress
with a corset structure takes center stage, featuring a mesh fabric that creates an intriguing visual
effect. The corset extends to the neck and shoulders, adding a hint of drama. To enhance the
ensemble, a white quilted jacket is layered over the dress from the chest line, providing a contrast
of colors and textures. This combination of corset and jacket creates a bold and unique statement.

"Kaleidoscope - The Cosmic Waves" is a fashion collection that transcends traditional boundaries,
offering a fusion of futuristic aesthetics, Emirati culture, and artistic innovation. Through these
three highlighted outfits, the collection showcases the versatility of its designs, the interplay of
colors and textures, and the ability to create garments that inspire wearers to embark on their own
cosmic journeys.

Visual Research

These fashion trends for SS23 showcase the industry's continuous evolution and the designers'
innovative approaches to silhouette, color, texture, and materials. Whether it's the resurgence of
tailored suits, the allure of mini dresses with opulent details, the embrace of cerulean blue, the
fusion of feminine sheers, or the captivating silver metallics, these trends reflect the ever-changing
landscape of fashion and provide an array of options for individuals to express their unique style.

Tailored Suits: The SS23 runway shows witnessed a surge in the popularity of tailored suits, with
a particular emphasis on slouchy and oversized blazers. Valentino showcased the trend with their
relaxed-fit blazers in vibrant hues, while even Chanel opted for a more laid-back approach to their
signature bouclé jackets, introducing relaxed-fit versions in playful pinks. For those who prefer
sharp tailoring, Victoria Beckham's collection featured simple tailored blazers that doubled as chic
mini dresses, offering versatility and sophistication.

an added focus on texture. Design houses such as Givenchy embraced the opulence of pearl
embellishments on their mini dresses, adding a touch of luxury and glamour. Chanel, on the other
hand, showcased belted little black dresses (LBDs) with exquisite details, creating an elegant and
feminine silhouette. Versace went for a bold and flashy approach, incorporating shiny purple

Blue: In terms of color trends, bright cerulean blue has

emerged as a standout choice for the SS23 season. Style
Editor Laura Weatherburn shares her perspective on the
season's cool color palette, appreciating the contrast it
offers to the prevalent pink Barbiecore trend. She finds
cerulean blue to be sophisticated, versatile, and
complementary to her predominantly black wardrobe.
Specifically, Weatherburn has her eye on an oversized
overcoat by Christopher John Rogers, envisioning it as a
très chic addition to her collection.

13
Ultra-Femme Sheers: Sensual mesh and sheer fabrics have taken the fashion world by storm, but
with a notable emphasis on an uber-feminine twist. Valentino's runway featured mini dresses
adorned with playful ruffles, infusing a sense of romance and whimsy into the sheer trend. Chanel
opted for cool-girl chevrons, adding a touch of edginess to their sheer ensembles. Meanwhile,

striking manner.

Design Process

My process of designing one of the most essential projects of my life took a start with
researching further into the presentation shared by our project supervisor, focusing mainly on
terms such as Emirati and futuristic. Which led me to some initial sketches and ideas for my
collection of three outfits. However, the process of reaching towards final sketches of outfits
faced a challenge after a visit to the Museum of the Future, as the requirements of the project
took few major turns. Despite, I amended my initial ideas into new requirements, and finalized
my sketches as soon as possible. Meanwhile, I began my fabric research. After few visits to the
market, bought in few fabric samples to be approved by the project supervisor. Moreover, as one
of my designs had quilted technique used in jacket so begin with the research of what would be
the best option in order to get jacket quilted effect.

Meanwhile, I finalized all the fabrics required for the outfits and got the necessary amount of
fabric as per each outfit. Fabric includes normal crepe, thick crepe for lining, silk organza,
taffeta, glass organza. After finalizing all my fabrics, I first constructed the pattern for the outfits
which requires patternmaking and tested it on calico before directly cutting it on main fabric.
Testing patterns once before cutting on actual fabric guided me to makes changes into my
designs which could make designs more visually pleasing and accurate.

Outfit 1 - The Eye Of The Future

The process for outfit 1 began with first making the inner dress from silver fabric. First created
the pattern for basic low-cut dress with princess seam and stitched it. Next, the construction of
kaftan which required draping on mannequin. The process was quite complexed due to the fabric
type, but once the shape of kaftan was there, the fabric was cut accordingly and began the
stitching of kaftan. After completing the stitching of kaftan, to stylize and accessorize the look of
the outfit I made a belt along.

Outfit 2 - The Confidence Suit

The process for this outfit began with first making the pattern on calico and stitching and testing
it on mannequins, in order to minimize errors while working with main fabric. Once, all patterns
were tested on mannequins with calico, next I began to lay out all the patterns on actual fabric
before cutting, to ensure zero wastage. After cutting the fabric, I started to stitch the jacket first
as it is one of the most complicated and complexed pieces. And lastly, stitched the pants.

Finalized Fabric for outfit 1.

Outfit 3 - The White Duvet Dress
The process of this outfit began with first constructing the quilted jacket on calico, as that was
most complexed part of the outfit. Once alterations to its fittings were made, next I cut the main
fabric first as quilting would be time consuming. Meanwhile, I prepared the fabric for inner
dress, but this time I thought it would be fine to directly cut on main fabric as its basic fitted
dress. However, when the inner dress was stitched, and I tried it on mannequin along with jacket
it was way too loose, and bodice was just not matching at all with the jacket. Overall look turned
out to be really bad, mainly it was due to the inner dress. Therefore, I removed the bodice section
from the inner dress and got skin colored mesh fabric instead of same fabric, replacing it with the
bodice. After making this change in the dress the overall look of the outfit completely matched
what I imagined.
