Ralph Zine

A zine by it's very nature has a short lifespan and aimed at a niche target audience. I
thought it a perfect vehicle to realise my intention to visually document the transition from
child to adulthood. This adolescent period is very transient and in this short period of time
they must learn to cope with not just physical changes to their bodies but also learn how
to tackle pressures of school, social media presence and worldwide pandemic's whilst still
maintaining good mental health. To achieve the intimacy I desired I featured a member of
my family. The images I chose illustrate a childlike quality as well as his more mature
sensitive and delicate nature. They capture the idle time a teen has to fill, the solitary
moments he occupies in empty spaces... a void to be filled both personally, mentally and
environmentally. Ralph is at odds with his familiar local like a child who is transitioning
between these two states.. The journey is often awkward and disjointed. I used stitch over
the zine to infer that life is like a tapestry, we pick up knowledge, experiences, people and
places as we go along and weave them into our own story as we grow.

I have used a mix of typography not just for visual effect but to reference that at this age,
we often try out different ways of writing, dressing, speaking, peer groups etc. to see
which best fit. I wanted to incorporate fonts with a structure, to represent the restrictions
that accompany adulthood together with fonts that have a freeness to emphasise the
freedoms of boyhood. The juxtaposition of the photography with the typography ranging
from childlike to sophisticated gives the zine the restless adolescent energy and
awkward, raw aesthetic I was seeking to create. I wanted to incorporate the lyrics from
Bob Dylan's 'Forever Young'. It was written for his son and celebrates the virtues of youth.
The outcome becomes a retrospective of a transient time which would be collected and
saved for the future.

Alchemy Skincare Packaging Project
The brief was to create branding and packaging design for a skincare range for a mature
and sophisticated target audience. I chose the word Alchemy as it is defined as the
process of taking something ordinary and turning it into something extraordinary,
sometimes in a way that cannot be explained. I wanted 'Alchemy Skincare' to be a
luxurious experience for customers and that informed my colour choices of rich gold
tones teamed with mysterious and darker blues. I want the target audience to believe that
using Alchemy skincare becomes an alchemical task i.e a magical transformation or

creation which, after all, is exactly what everyone wants to believe is achievable from their
skincare. I created the swirling, fluid lines to represent movement and the combining of
the finest, almost magical ingredients which transforms your skin.

Portraiture Explorations
Inspired by the work of Isabel Reitmeyer and Helen Van Meene, I documented two close
family members, as they transition from childhood into adulthood. I wanted to explore the
deeper emotions and feelings felt by young boys and girls during this transitional stage of

life; I wanted to expose their awkwardness and the pressures placed on them by society
to act and appear in a certain way. The 'push-pull' of this period can be agonising and
confusing. I have attempted to visualise the mentally draining times that are taken to
contemplate and try to fathom the physical changes and social problems this transition
throws at them.

This textural ceramic investigation was inspired by the issue of coral bleaching. Many
people around the world are doing their part to save our seas, including contemporary
artists, from textile art and ceramics to paintings and sculptures. Through their art, they
create powerful visualizations that pay homage to the beauty of the ocean, but also
showcase the devastating effects of human impact. Global warming together with the
impact humans have on our environment has resulted in the deterioration and bleaching
of our coral reefs. It was my intention to explore the issue of this bleaching and this
informed my choice of porcelain. When fired it has a beautiful translucent white quality
reminiscent of the bleached coral. I have explored different forms and textures and
manipulated the porcelain to replicate the fragility and delicacy of these exquisite and
essential lifeforms.

Additional Drawing Skills and Research
In this additional section, I have tried to show breadth within my work and range of media
used including stitch both a means of drawing and of embellishment. I love to travel and
enjoy sketching the urban environment in particular. I prefer a loser, freer style of drawing
although I am also capable of rendering an image accurately and with greater detail.
