Modern construction methods to reduce energy consumption

Introduction:

Energy conservation has become a major concern in building design, thus it makes
sense to apply the notion of energy costing to construction projects and look for
ways to minimise total energy consumed during their lifetime. Even though the total
amount of energy consumed in a building over its lifetime may be many times that
consumed during its construction, there are a number of reasons why energy use in
the construction process, particularly in the building materials used, should be
treated as a priority in the search for ways to reduce energy use in the built
environment as a whole. (Tiwari, 2001) The challenge of energy gains and
consumption in buildings in the building design is still in its early stages, but
it is gaining greater worldwide attention. There are numerous primary factors that
influence energy consumption in buildings in the building sector. These are aspects
that come from the building services, building envelope, climate, and human
variables. Although location, orientation, size, built form, shape/layout, and
other factors influence the building envelope, building services are determined by
factors such as system type and size, energy need and supply, plant efficiency,
plant management, and operating regime, among others. Human factors include comfort
requirements, occupancy regimes, human activities, administration, and maintenance.
The energy used in building is critical to any strategy for reducing energy supply
and demand and thereby contributing to the current effort to prevent global
warming. (Fathi et al., 2015) Fig:1
Basic natural conditioning techniques, evaporative cooling, and natural lighting,
as well as mechanical cooling devices, are all examples of energy-saving
solutions.Foremost is identifying where the energy is used. By identifying
operational inefficiencies, it helps in identifying the areas where savings can be
achieved, allowing companies to make more informed decisions. By integrating self-
powered, wireless sensors with real-time energy intelligence software, companies
may not only obtain the necessary overview, but also analyse the data to design a
data-driven plan for the future. This can assist to eliminate costly downtime,
waste, improve agility, and increase production.
