Current problems of Dhaka city's urban design and planning
and possible solutions :
▪ Overpopulation and Traffic Congestion: Dhaka suffers from
severe overpopulation, leading to traffic congestion and
inadequate transportation infrastructure. To address this issue,
potential solutions include:
▪ Expanding and improving public transportation systems,
such as buses, trains, and waterways.
▪ Implementing traffic management strategies, including
dedicated bus lanes, traffic signal optimization, and efficient
parking systems.
▪ Promoting non-motorized transportation options like cycling
and walking, by creating dedicated lanes and pedestrian-
friendly infrastructure.

▪ Inadequate Infrastructure: Insufficient infrastructure development

is a significant problem in Dhaka. Some possible solutions are:
▪ connectivity.
▪ Improving the drainage system to mitigate the impacts of
frequent flooding.
▪ Developing and expanding utilities like water supply,
sewage systems, and waste management facilities.
▪ Housing and Slums: Rapid urbanization has resulted in a shortage
of affordable housing and the growth of slum settlements.
Potential solutions may involve:
▪ Promoting affordable housing projects and providing
incentives for private developers to construct low-cost
housing units.
▪ Implementing slum redevelopment programs to improve
living conditions and relocate residents to safer areas.
▪ Strengthening urban planning regulations to discourage the
growth of informal settlements.

▪ Environmental Degradation: Dhaka faces significant

environmental challenges, including air pollution, water pollution,
and inadequate green spaces. Some potential solutions include:
▪ Implementing stricter emissions standards for vehicles and
promoting the use of cleaner fuels.
▪ Establishing wastewater treatment plants and enforcing
regulations to prevent industrial pollution.
▪ Creating and preserving green spaces, parks, and urban
forests to improve air quality and enhance the urban
environment.
1. Lack of Urban Greening: The city has a deficiency of green
spaces and limited access to recreational areas. Potential
solutions could include:
• Encouraging the development of urban parks, community
gardens, and green rooftops.
• Designating vacant or underutilized land for green space
creation.
• Incorporating green infrastructure into urban planning, such
as vertical gardens and tree-lined streets.

▪ Informal Urbanization: The rapid growth of informal settlements

and unregulated urban expansion pose challenges to effective
urban planning. Solutions may involve:
▪ Regularizing and integrating informal settlements into the
formal urban fabric by providing basic services and
infrastructure.
▪ Strengthening the enforcement of urban planning
regulations to control unauthorized construction and land
use.
It's important to note that addressing these challenges requires comprehensive
planning, effective governance, and collaboration among various stakeholders,
including government agencies, urban planners, community groups, and
residents. Ongoing monitoring, evaluation, and adaptive management are
crucial to ensure the effectiveness of implemented solutions.
