The recently released PSI 2.0 and 2.4L engines feature longer timing belt service
intervals than the prior Mazda 2.0 and 2.2L engines. This extended service interval
does not affect the overall importance of performing timing belt replacement according
to the change interval specified in the operator manual.
Mazda engines are very similar to the PSI, configured in such a way that if the timing
belt failed, the valves could contact the pistons. PSI 2.0 and 2.4L engines are no
different and maintain the same timing belt failure mode where valves can contact the
pistons. The primary difference between the two engine systems is that the service
interval is higher on the PSI version. The following figure, derived from the current
periodic maintenance and operator manuals, shows the difference in the service
intervals on the PSI and Mazda engines.
We strongly recommend following the specified timing belt change intervals to prevent
the possibility of engine damage. Not following the recommended service change
intervals can also result in the denial of requested warranty coverage.

Mazda 2.0 and 2.2L engines, as well as the PSI 2.0 and 2.4L engines, require the
engine compartment to be free of debris so these materials do not make their way
behind the timing belt cover. Timing belt covers provide shielding for the rotating
components but they are not hermetically sealed. Debris that makes its way behind the
timing belt cover can result in timing belt, and subsequent engine damage.
It is important to stress that operators must perform their 8 hour shift checks. This
includes the removal of any debris from the unit, as indicated in the periodic and
maintenance manuals. Additionally, if the equipment is operated in an environment with
poor housekeeping where debris can be picked up from the floor or yard it is the
responsibility of the owners and/or operators to take the proper steps to avoid it and/or
dispose of the debris properly.

Maintaining units according to the periodic and operator manuals is critical to preserve
the equipment’s eligibility in the warranty policy. Failure to follow the maintenance
requirements can result in un-scheduled unit downtime, premature component failures,
and denial of requested warranty coverage.
