JUL 2024 Design thinking
Empathise - He empathised with himself when he was working in
Bangalore - tea machine and tea stall
Ideate - Tea cafe, TrupTEA
Test - Staff, freshly brewed tea

Ideate - tea-brewing machine

Empathise - interviewed the founders of popular tea cafes across
India and floated a survey in cafes, offices and households
Define - intended to stick to marketing and outsource the
manufacturing of a tea vending machine
Applications of Design

Define - offices, eateries and households

Fundamentals &

Thinking(FADT)

Empathise - consumers didn't like the taste and it was unhygienic

as the machine attracted insects like cockroaches
Define - Kasliwal concluded that a tea machine for households did

not solve a big problem for its buyers
as one could easily make a cup of tea at home
Prototype - install components such as a flow-meter and a relay-
board: cardboard model
Test - MyT Brewer

Empathise - tea traders, designers/hardware specialists,

entrepreneurs, investors and other industry experts
Prototype - Canisters, automate the system of adding water by
attaching a pump, heater to boil milk
Prototype - reading recipe off a barcode system
Applications of Design

Prototype - milk and water were kept separately and pumped into a

pan to be boiled together

Test - storage compartments were placed outside the body
JUL 2024
Prototype - enclosing all the components in an acrylic body
Test - demonstration for a potential investor
Prototype - very slowly pass near-boiling-temperature water
through a heap of tea leaves simulating the steeping of tea
Test - tea, tasted fine resembled the tea made with tea-bags
Prototype - robotic arm to dip tea bag

Define - Home-brewed fresh taste

Prototype - dipping a heater in the cup, manufacturer to design a
custom heater
Test - heater got very dirty as it was dipped in milk every time it
was used
Applications of Design

Prototype - Computer Aided Design (CAD) software

Fundamentals &

Thinking(FADT)

Prototype - had two nozzles, one each to deliver hot milk and
water to a cup
Which prototype was MVP?

Thinking(FADT)
Applications of Design
Fundamentals &
The minimum viable prototype (MVP) in the case was a simple
machine that could brew tea in a variety of ways. It had a few basic
features, such as the ability to select the type of tea, the amount of
water, and the brewing time. The founders tested the MVP with a
small group of users, and they received positive feedback.

The MVP was not a fully-featured product. It did not have all of the
features that the founders eventually wanted to include in the MyT
Brewer. However, it was enough to test the basic concept of the

product and get feedback from users.

it was enough to test the basic concept of the product and get feedback from
users.

The MVP allowed the founders to test their idea and get feedback early on.
This feedback helped them to improve the product and make it more
successful. The MVP also helped them to save time and money by avoiding

the need to develop a fully-featured product that may not have been
successful.

What is the dilemma?

The dilemma in the case "MyT Brewer - Part A" is whether to continue
working on an improved prototype or enter the market.

Option 1: The team has developed a prototype for a new type of coffee
brewer, but it is not yet perfect. They could continue working on the
prototype to make it even better, but this would take time and money.
Applications of Design

Option 2: They could also enter the market with the current prototype,
even though it is not perfect. This would allow them to start generating

Thinking(FADT)

revenue, but it could also damage their reputation if the product is not well-
received.

What is the dilemma?

The team's decision will depend on a number of factors, including their
financial resources, their confidence in the product, and their assessment of
the competitive landscape.

If they have the resources to continue working on the prototype, and they
are confident that the product will be successful, then they may decide to
delay market entry. However, if they are running out of money, or they are

not confident in the product, then they may decide to enter the market with

the current prototype.

Solution
Focus on product improvement:

The best solution for the team will depend on their specific
circumstances. If they have the resources to continue working on
the prototype, and they are confident that the product will be
successful, then they may decide to delay market entry. However, if
they are running out of money, or they are not confident in the
product, then they may decide to enter the market with the current
prototype.
