1 Double Sheet Detektor, Introduction 3
Double sheet detectors monitor the automatic sheet destacking sheet thickness and/or higher distance between sensors means
on sheet working machines like presses, slitters, welding also bigger sensors. There are also several type of amplifiers
machines, printing and coating machines etc. If double or multiple available: Types for mounting into enclosures or cabinets and
sheets are destacked instead of only one sheet, expensive also types for top mounting outside on machines or walls. On
demages on machines and/ or tools may occure. A double sheet installation amplifier´s adjust is necessary for the first time for the
detector consists of a specificated sheet thickness and material. If thickness changes

double sheet signal is
used for stopping the
sheet working machine or
for switching the automatic sheet eject and/ or for controlling
optical and acoustical alarms etc. Fig. 2 shows an application
example on an automatic sheet destacker. The single sided sheet
touching sensor is mostly used on machines on which is no space
for both sided no sheet touching sensors. Fig. 3 shows such an
example on a sheet destacker for scrolled sheets. The sensor
(arrow) is fixed flush in the machine opposite the sheet stack. The
sheet sucker unit pulls the sheet against the sensor on each
destacking cycle. As the sensor is a magnetic system, each sheet
is also automatically pulled against the sensor´s active area.
Same sensor is also often used on sheet slitters on which it is flush
mounted into the slitter´s table. The sensor´s dimensions depend
on the maximum sheet thickness and/ or max. distance between
double sided sensors and on the kind of sheet material. Higher

layers of thin gauge steel sheets. It consists of a sensor and the
switching amplifier. The sensor is fitted so that the sheet can
touch the sensor´s active surface. Detection is possible both on
moving or not moving sheets. There must be no distance
between sheet and sensor. Usually the sensor is mounted flush
into a machine part like slitter table etc. Together with a
machine´s specificated holder (not delivered), for example the
sensor can mounted near a sheet sucker unit that takes off the
sheet from stack. Every time the sucker has picked up a sheet,
it is pressed against the sensor´s active surface, checking for
double / multiple or single sheet. The sensors are magnetic, FT 01S

with exception of IT 04DA have an adjustable (internal,

How it operates:
FIELDLINES The sheet thickness measuring system is based on the

determining of the magnetic conductivity of the sheet. The
MAGNET
conductivity depends on the sheet thickness; higher
thickness means higher conductivity. A permanent

magnet sends a magnetic field through the sheet and a
magnet field sensitive element in the sensor monitors the
field density. The density is transformed into an electrical

1. Application.
For several applications like decorating, forming rectangle cans 4.Specification
from rounded cans, welding ears for handles etc. the welded
seam on cans, drums, pails etc. must be in a predetermined Power/ Line 230, 110, 48, 24 V AC or 24 VDC
position. The optical sensor SPS 01 in conjuntion with a can
turning unit (not our product range) allows such positioning. For Power requirements app. 5 VA
this the can is turned in front of the sensor as shown in Fig.1.
The sensor´s controller SPC 01 output relay contact stops the Protection Controller IP 65
turning motor or switches a clutch as soon as the seam enters
the sensor´s ligth spot. As the sensor system is based on the Protection Sensor IP 64
changing of optical reflection between the seam´s and the Temperature 0 - 50 Grd. C.
can´s surface, it can used for blank cans as well as for
decorated cans with dark blue / black seam and blank / bright Contact load max. 250V 1 A AC/DC
seam welding margin area. Not detectable are inert gas welded
blank cans on which the seam has the same silver blank Contact lifetime min. 1* 10 ^6 cycles
surface as the can has. Using a special co axial fibre optic in the
sensor allows the detection of even very small seams like Super Response time app. 0.5 msec
WIMA seams. The controller generates a switching output Relay delay adjustable: min.:0,1 max. 1 sec.
pulse thats length can adjusted via a pot in the controller
(contact delay min.: 0,1 max.: 1 sec). The output pulse Controller dimensions 160 x 80 x 55 mm
switches a break- make- contact (SPDT) which can be used for
controlling motor stops, clutches etc. The sensor´s sensitivity
(optical contrast / degree of reflection , that switches the output 5. Connection Diagram
relay) is adjustable on a screw driver operated adjust in the
controller. On decorated cans on which the graphic artwork
looks similar like the seam (i.e. black vertical lines on a bright
background) careful sensitivity adjusts and / or changing of
distance A between sensor´s and can´s surface may be
necessary. An other solution in that case may be mounting the
sensor on an other vertical can position, that do not has that
kind of black lines.
2.Mounting.
The cylindrical sensor must be fixed in a user made holder
according to the machine´s requirements. The sensor´s
longitudinal axis must be the same as can´s diametrical axis.
Distance A between the sensor´s optic surface and the can´s
surface should be between 2 and 6 mm. The controller can be
fixed via the 4 pcs. 4,2 mm blind holes that are reachable after
removing the controller´s cover. 6. Sensor Dimensions (mm)
3.Adjust.
Connect sensor and power according to the connection
diagram. Run the system but without activating the can´s stop.
Put a can on the turning unit and watch the sensitivity LED
lamp. Turn the sensitivity full left (counter clockwise, MIN.) and
than slowly right (clockwise, MAX.) till every time the seam
passes the sensor a pulse is indicated on the lamp. If
screwdriver adjust range give no result, change distance A
between sensor and can. Now activate the can´s stop. Test
correct positioning, adjust relay delay screw driver adjust if
necessary i.e. stretch the pulse from output contact to make
