Procedure for Cleaning and Inspection of Plate Heat Exchanger

1. Purposed
This procedure is applied to carry out cleaning and inspection of Plate Heat Exchanger.

2. Safety Precaution and Requirement

 Engineer or Supervisor shall establish the general safety, i.e. safe access to and from
the work place, safe place of work, safe methods of work, use of correct work
equipment, use of correct PPE, refer to safety rule.
 Supervisor or technician must ensure that work order and safety document or Permit
to Work has been received, inform and co-ordinate to control room operator before
commencing of work.
 Technician has enough competencies to do the work, understand the danger that may
rise from mechanical or electrical hazard and also known philosopy of operation and
maintenance of steam turbine.

3. Tools and Consumable

 Lifting Tools (chain blocks, shackles and wire sling, cotton sling etc).
 Special Tools refer to manual if any.
 Socket set
 Slogging wrench
 Combination spanner set
 Consumable material.

4. Preparations before Inspection

 Receive Work Order.
 Get Permit to Work.
 Contact the Central Control Room Operator for confirmation that the area where will
be inspected is safe.
 Install scaffolding if needed.
 Remove the auxiliary piping, piping supports or any clamp and all instruments
equipment that may interfere with the disassemble/reassemble procedures.

5. Dismantling of Plate Heat Exchanger

 Remove pipe connection from heat exchanger.
 Check sliding surface of carrying bar and roller of movable cover.
 Remove protected cover from tie bolts.
 Clean the threads of the tie bolts.
 Mark the number of plates in sequence.
 Remove the tie bolts from the frame as a rule in the plate heat exchanger.
 Move the movable cover for disassembling the plate from frame.
 Opening of plate package.

6. Cleaning
 Always remove plates one by one and number them properly.
 Use nylon or other types of soft scrubbing brushes to clean the plate.
 A high pressure cleaner can be used with absolute care and never add abrasives, make
sure they are re-fitted in the same order.

7. Assembling of Plate Heat Exchanger

 Check that all sealing surfaces (surfaces in contact with heat transfer medium) should
be free from any kind of dusts.
 Check that all gaskets are in good and correct condition.
 The plates should be hung in proper order.
 Press the plate assembly together and it should form a honeycomb structure.
 Place the tie bolts.
 Tightening of the tie bolts should be carried out alternately and diagonally.
 Check the position of the tie bolts during tightening.
 Tighten them keeping parallel the movable cover and the fixed cover as in
disassembly.
 The tightening size should be that given on the nameplate attached to fixed cover.
 On completion, the plate heat exchanger can be pressure tested.

8. Leak Test

 Leakage detection shall be performed once assembly of PHE has been completed.
Check if any leakages appear at top, bottom and both sides of plate pack by carrying
out hydrostatic test. Testing pressure shall not exceed the design pressure.

 Maintain pressure for 10 minutes or longer. All works can be completed if no leakage.
In case of any leakage detected, mark on the leaking part and disassemble PHE again
for visual check on the heat transfer plate and gasket surface.
