ABSTRACT
This report is a compilation of twelve weeks industrial attachment I had at Narok County

Referral Hospital, Human Resource Department. The report summarizes the work done

during this period, challenges encountered, my expectations as a student, highlights of tasks

performed, and the points of the attachment compared to the curriculum.

CHAPTER ONE:

INTRODUCTION

1.1 INTRODUCTION ON THE INSTITUTION ATTACHED


The Narok County Referral Hospital is situated in Narok Town.

It is the leading health facility in the County.

Its main objective is to ensure universal access to quality health services consisting of

promotive, preventive, curative, and rehabilitative services to all people in the County.

1.2 STUDENT’S PERSONAL EXPECTATIONS


As a Human Resource Management Student, I have my personal expectations which includes

gaining work ethics, developing work-based skill, knowledge and competency and optimize

my learning experience.

CHAPTER TWO:

2.1 HISTORY OF NAROK COUNTY REFERRAL HOSPITAL.
Narok County Referral Hospital is a public Hospital under the Narok County Department of

health and sanitation. The hospital is in Narok town, Narok North Sub County. The hospital

serves a population of around 1, 157, 873 people on referral basis and 41,500 in catchment. It

is the only level IV facility in parts of Bomet County (Mulot area) and Kajiado County

( Mosiro)

The hospital has 36 sections with a total of 388 staff. The hospital has a bed capacity of 195

with average of 90 -110 bed occupancy of daily. The hospital opened its doors in 1930 during

the colonial era with clay and bricks buildings. In 1938-1941 the buildings were upgraded

by the native industrial training department. The British Government added some wards

which currently house the administration block. In 1942 the Italian prisoners of war under

the British Government built staff quarters. Which were Later demolished in the year 2020

to pave way for the development of the new hospital wing. Post Independent period in 1983,

Nyayo ward and the Outpatient department were built by Kenyan Government and

commissioned by then President, Daniel Toroitich Arap Moi. In the period between 1994-

2007, the amenity ward was built by cost sharing funds. In 2007-2008 Operation Eyesight

Universal in conjunction with the Government of Kenya further constructed the Eye Unit,

Theatre and Eye/Surgical Ward.

Following devolution, The Narok County Government did renovation of all buildings in the

period between 2015-2016 and subsequently upgraded the hospital to a County Referral

Level IV Hospital. The National Government under the MES project constructed a State of

the art Renal, CT scan and Intensive Care Unit In 2016-2017. Moreover, modern theatre

and radiological equipment were further installed after rehabilitation of both Theatre and

Radiology Units. In 2019 to date, the County government embarked on an ambitious massive

upgrade of the hospital to level V Teaching Referral Hospital.

2.1 OBJECTIVES OF NAROK COUNTY REFERRAL HOSPITAL.
Eliminate communicable disease.

i. Halt and reverse rising burden of NCDs.

ii. Reduce the burden of violence and injuries.

iii. Provide essential health care.

iv. Minimize exposure to health risk factor.

v. Strengthen collaboration with private and health care sectors

4.1 HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT DEPARTMENT


The Human Resource Department deals with the recruitment of employees in various

positions of the hospital.

This department creates policies and regulations for the employees.

This department is actively responsible for the hospital growth and optimum service.

To ensure the right people with right skills, for the job position in the hospital.

4.2 PROCUREMENT DEPARTMENT


Hospital procurement is a process of purchasing goods and services to a large scale that are

cost effective and give a quality result for hospitals.

This process determines if the sales representative promote a product or if the product exists

in an extra stock.

4.2.1 OBJECTIVES OF PROCURENT DEPARTMENT IN NAROK COUNTY


REFERRAL HOSPITAL.
To save cost and supply the requirements of business in the most convenient and

conventional ways.

To process errorless system for the procurement process.

4.3 ACCOUNTS DEPARTMENT


Hospital accounting is a particular system of accounting which accumulates communication

and interprets historical and projected economic data that are useful for the purpose of

ascertaining the financial position and operating results of a hospital.

The department is responsible for the financial growth of a hospital.

It sets up budgets, plans and arrange financial resources to maintain the smooth running of

the hospital.

This department is also responsible for purchasing of medical supplies and staff wage.

4.3.1 OBJECTIVES OF ACCOUNTS DEPARTMENT IN NAROK COUNTY

 To help the hospital to operate efficiently by making sure that it has money available

to pay its expenses and is effectively collecting its revenue.

CHAPTER FIVE:

SUMMARY, CONCLUSION, RECOMMENDATIONS

5.1 BENEFITS /LEARNING


During the twelve weeks of my Industrial attachment, I learnt about different types of leaves

which include Annual leave, Maternity leave, Paternity leave, Child adoption leave, Study

leave, Unpaid leave and Terminal leave. I also learnt about Computation and processing of

leave forms.

I learnt about keeping of records which I did by arranging employees’ files according to the

year of employment, filing of employees’ personal documents.

I learnt more on computer skills through word processing, typing and printing of documents.

I also developed my communication skills by receiving and passing information in and out of

office.

I learnt how to write different types of letters such as arrival letters, release letters, letter of

deployment.

I also learnt about disciplinary cases such as Gross Misconduct, how to deal with disciplinary

cases, how to make decisions, how to write show case and summon letters.

I learnt on Benefits and Compensation, Pension Scheme and Gratuity.

5.2 CONCLUSION
In conclusion, I benefited a lot during my industrial attachment. I managed to apply

theoretical knowledge from the university into practice through many tasks which I

performed in the Human Resource Management department, Registry Office.

I improved on the skills like listening, presentation, secrecy matters, creativity and

innovation, communication, self- reliance, adaptability and flexibility, record keeping,

photocopying, typing and printing and acting freely around people.

5.3 RECOMMENDATION
I would like to suggest that clients use official language or come with someone who can

communicate/ translate what the clients intends to communicate

The client should try to use a polite language.

I would like to suggest that the attachees to be involve in trainings such as recruitment,

selection and placement so that they can develop skills knowledge and competency in

conducting recruitment process.

The offices in the institution should have vast space to accommodate more attachment

students.
