Grade 6 Term 1

Curriculum Overview
English
The first unit of Grade 6 English focuses on the literary genre of life
writing through the lense of the IMYC Big Idea, Collaboration.
Students will explore the literary conventions of the genre by
studying extracts from autobiographies by authors from different
backgrounds and experiences, such as celebrities, business figures,
sports players, artists and politicians. The course will conclude with
students reflecting on important moments in their lives, eventually
composing an autobiographical piece of their own.

Mathematics
For Term 1, Grade 6 students will
be focusing on topics they are
familiar with: Fractions and
Percentages. They will be
tackling more challenging
concepts that are built on what
they have already learnt in
Grade 5. Students will explore
concepts like dividing fractions
and solving word problems in
percentage. They will also delve
more into how these
mathematical concepts apply to
everyday examples.
Humanities
For the unit of Collaboration,
students will be exploring the
question of ‘How did the
Ancient Romans work together
to achieve a common goal?’
Students will look further at
the different groups in Ancient
Rome and see how they all
functioned for a common goal,
before exploring the building
of the Roman Empire and
components of the army and
its battle technology.

Curriculum Overview
Science
Grade 6 students will explore science process skills as an
introduction to Science, learn about states of matter and
classification of matter through collaborative inquiry into the
objects around them, as well as real-life examples that they
encounter daily. Students will get to apply science process
skills systematically, in simple experiments performed to study
relevant science concepts.

D&T
Collaboration is the key to
successful product design.
Students will learn about
how Microsoft and Apple
launch revolutionary
products. They will see that it
is not just one person but
the collective team that
contributes to that success.
They will then collaborate as
a group to come up with a
great product design
solution that will solve a
given problem.
ICT
For their first IMYC ICT unit,
students will collaboratively
create a design for a space
station and learn about the
International Space Station.
After the design work, they
will use Google SketchUp for
Schools to transfer their
design into a computer model
by importing objects and
using the tools within
SketchUp to make their own
solar panels to make their
work look unique.
 Grade 6 Term 1
Curriculum Overview
Life Skills/STEAM
This term, students will be looking into the difference between
a fixed and growth mindset. Students will explore the elements
of each with a view to understanding the difference a growth
mindset can make to their learning. Students will then develop
their research and presentation skills. They will consider the
reliability and usefulness of sources, learn how to organise
notes, develop an understanding of plagiarism and how to
structure an essay. Students will have some ownership over this
as they can select a topic to research and will develop their
own question.

PE
DFor term 1, students will begin with court games.
Students will collaborate with one another and will
be able to identify their areas of strength and areas
of growth in regards to the court game. Expanding in
their collaborative skills, they will develop activities
that they need to do in order to improve their areas
of growth and use their strengths to help their
classmates.
