Well Kill Procedures

Purpose and Objective

The primary purpose of this Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) is to serve as a reference for the Drill Site
Managers (DSM’s) to kill the well after taking influx. As defined by Chevron Well Control policy, the
method used to kill the well is driller’s method.

Scope

This document applies to all Chevron Pacific Indonesia (CPI) rigs operating in all SMO area. This procedure
assumes that well has been secured and shut in information is being recorded as outlined in shut in
procedures, , solid float is available in drill string, and the influx is not H2S. Any deviation from this SOP
should be discussed with Drilling Superintendent & Drilling Engineer

Procedure

• Annular BOP was BOP element to be used during the well kill procedure
• Super choke as primary choke, when failed switch to manual choke. Choke manifold line up
should be marked by open/close position. DSM shall determine which line used as primary and
back up.
• Pipe movement is prohibited during well killing.
• Mud gas separator monitoring
• For every testing BOP flush through choke line, manifold and MGS to ensure inside line is not
plugged with cutting and check all the corrosion connection, replaced when necessary.
• Calculated mud gas separator capacity using chevron kill sheet should be sufficient to handle
anticipated gas flow rate.

1. Prior to start killing, rig crews shall re-check all equipment to be used during killing process
• Assistant Driller to confirm choke manifold alignment
• Driller to coordinate with crews to line up mud pump to be used for well kill
• Driller to coordinate with mud boy & mud engineer regarding suction tank line-up and mud
weight of fluid

2. Bumping the float

• Driller to pump as slow as possible (SPR) through the drill string
• DSM to monitor casing pressure gauge for “lull” to indicate float is pumped off seat. Record
pressure as SIDPP (shut-in drill pipe pressure)
• If casing pressure begins to increase, DSM to inform Driller immediately shutdown pumps.
DSM shall record final drill pipe pressure and casing pressure to determine correct SIDPP
• Reset all stroke counters on choke panel and driller’s console to zero

3. Depending on expected surface pressures, annular will be primary barrier unless directed
otherwise by DSM
• If rams are to be selected, trapped pressure must not be handled between pipe rams and
annular when well kill operations are completed

4. Driller / Rig crews continue to monitor well while DSM prepares well control worksheet with
recorded SIDPP
• Designated person continues monitoring and recording well shut-in pressures at a minimum
of 5 minutes increments unless directed otherwise by DSM
• Designated person to relay pressure readings to Tool pusher and DSM every 10 minutes
• Once kill sheet is prepared, Driller to bring designated pump up to speed as directed by
DSM
• Mud pumps will be staged up slowly under the direction of the DSM
• Tool pusher / Tour Pusher / other person designated in PJSM will manipulate choke holding
casing pressure constant while pumps are brought up to speed under direction of DSM. DSM
shall give close direction & shall not operate the choke by himself
• Mud Engineer / pit crew monitor pit levels and ensure proper fluid levels are maintained for
circulation and no losses are occurring
• DSM shall order choke operator to add 100 psi overbalance as safety factor during killing

5. With pumps up to desired rate, DSM/Driller record circulating drill pipe pressure from both
drillers console and choke panel
• Choke operator to maintain constant drill pipe pressure with choke while circulating out
influx
• Driller to maintain constant pump rate while circulating
• Mud Engineer / pit crew monitor pit levels and insure proper fluid levels are maintained for
circulation and no losses are occurring. Mud engineer / pit crew to call out mud weights
every 15min while circulating

6. As gas approaches surface, choke operator to continue managing constant drill pipe pressure
• DSM shall alert the choke operator when the gas approaches surface for precaution
• Mud Engineer / pit crew monitor pit levels and insure proper fluid levels are maintained for
circulation and no losses are occurring
• Mud engineer / pit crew to call out mud weights minimum every 15min while circulating

7. Once all of influx has been removed from well with first circulation, shut down pump by
holding casing pressure constant
• Mud pumps will be staged down slowly under the direction of the DSM.
• Tool pusher / Tour Pusher / other person designated in PJSM will manipulate choke holding
casing pressure constant while pumps are shut down under direction of DSM. DSM shall
give close direction & shall not operate the choke by himself
• Mud Engineer / pit crew monitor pit levels and insure proper fluid levels are maintained for
circulation and no losses are occurring

8. With pumps shut down and well shut-in, evaluate casing and drill pipe pressures and determine
if all of influx has been removed from well
• DSM determines required kill weight mud required from original SIDPP.

• Mud Engineer / pit crew begin weighting up fluid in pits to kill mud weight specified by
DSM
• Mud engineer confirm current fluid volume exceeds necessary volume for circulating kill
weight mud. If not, develop circulation plan for weighting up mud returns or plan for
building new volume.
• Designated person continues monitoring and recording well shut-in pressures at a minimum
of 5 minutes increments unless directed otherwise by DSM.
• Designated person to relay pressure readings to Tool pusher and DSM every 10 minutes

9. Once mud has been weighted up, Driller to bring designated pump up to speed as directed by
DSM for circulating kill mud
• Mud pumps will be staged up slowly under the direction of the DSM
• Tool pusher / Tour Pusher / other person designated in PJSM will manipulate choke holding
casing pressure constant while pumps are brought up to speed under direction of DSM. DSM
shall give close direction & shall not operate the choke by himself
• Mud Engineer / pit crew monitor pit levels and ensure proper fluid levels are maintained for
circulation and no losses are occurring

10. With pumps up to desired rate, DSM/Driller record casing pressure from choke panel
• Choke operator to maintain constant casing pressure with choke while circulating kill mud to
bit under direction by DSM
• Driller to maintain constant pump rate while circulating
• Mud Engineer / pit crew monitor pit levels and insure proper fluid levels are maintained for
circulation and no losses are occurring.
• Mud engineer / pit crew to call out mud weights every 15min while circulating

11. Once kill mud weight reaches the bit, DSM and Driller record drill pipe pressure from both
drillers console and choke panel
• Choke operator to maintain constant drill pipe pressure with choke while circulating kill
mud to surface.
• Driller to maintain constant pump rate while circulating
• Mud Engineer / pit crew monitor pit levels and insure proper fluid levels are maintained for
circulation and no losses are occurring
• Mud engineer / pit crew to call out mud weights every 15min while circulating

12. With kill mud circulated to surface, Driller to shutdown pumps and verify the well is dead

13. Once well is confirmed dead, open annular with rig floor clear of all personnel
• Driller to continue monitoring well on trip tank for flow
• Rig crew to line up valves for normal circulation through flow line
