Introduction to MPD
• In Conventional Drilling, primary well control is
maintained solely by the hydrostatic pressure applied by
the drilling fluid

• MPD techniques proactively alter and manage the

annular pressure profile while maintaining constant BHP
and avoiding the influx of formation fluids

• Note: Managed pressure drilling is not under-balanced

Petrobras Plans
• All exploration rigs to have MPD

• ‘SETE’ rigs will come with MPD

• Addendums will be made to existing contracts to

implement MPD

• One of our competitors already has MPD in Brazil

• Weatherford is selling MPD packages

Managed Pressure Drilling
• The key drivers for manipulating the annular pressure profile are:
• Reduce non-productive time arising from kicks, lost circulation and stuck
pipe when the well is drilled conventionally.
• Minimize overbalance to increase ROP, avoid differential sticking, prevent
lost circulation and minimize invasive formation damage.
• Maintain a constant bottom hole pressure to avoid wellbore ballooning
• Extend the depth between casing setting points by navigating the narrow
window between formation pressure and formation strength, especially
critical in deeper water and HPHT environments
• Enable faster kick detection
• Provide the ability for applying dynamic well control i.e. provide the ability to
apply immediate additional surface back pressure to kill the well instead of
raising the mud weight

Managed Pressure Drilling
• The annular pressure profile can be altered or manipulated by:
• Applying/maintaining surface pressure while drilling ahead
• Employing a riserless system which results in a dual gradient; i.e. drilling
mud in the wellbore and seawater gradient above
• Utilizing a dual gradient system with different mud densities in both the riser
and below the BOP.
• Maintaining circulation while making connections to ensure continuous
constant bottom hole pressures
• Drilling without returns to surface by employing a riser mud cap, either
floating or pressurized

Managed Pressure Drilling
• Managed Pressure Drilling operations must not be
conducted without written approval of the Company
MPD Technical Authority (Manager Technology
Applications) or designee.

• Managed Pressure Drilling (MPD) and Under Balanced

Drilling (UBD) use a number of techniques to control
and vary the hydrostatic pressure profile and bottom-
hole pressure

Continuous Annular Pressure Management (CAPM™)
• CAPM™ Equipment required:
• Concentric riser (casing liner string hung off at surface) or a booster line with
a large internal diameter
• CAPM™ centrifuges
• Rotating Circulating Device - RCD (to take advantage of the enhanced kick
detection provided by the drilling manifold)
• Drilling manifold (complete with automated chokes and a highly accurate
mass-type flowmeter(s))
• Flow stop valve (installed in the BHA to prevent u-tubing of the heavy drilling
fluid during connections with the pumps off.
