Ans. 1 Very short type questions. [5X1=5]

a) Biocatalysis is defined as the use of natural substances that include enzymes from biological sources
or whole cells to speed up chemical reactions.
b) Bacillus subtilis
c) Fungal biofilms are communities of adherent cells surrounded by an extracellular matrix. These
biofilms are commonly found during infection caused by a variety of fungal pathogens.
d) An immobilized enzyme is, therefore, attached to an inert, organic, or inorganic or insoluble material,
such as calcium alginate or silica
e) 73 atm

Ans. 2 Short Answer types Question [4X2.5=10]

a) Production of fructose from glucose via invertase
Lipase used for the manufacture various fine chemicals.
b) Enzymatic recycling process uses an enzyme capable of specifically depolymerizing the PET
(polyethylene terephthalate) contained in various plastics or textiles. Current thermomechanical
recycling processes have limitations: only clear plastic can be recycled in closed loops, with a loss of
quality in each cycle, making it difficult to obtain new products from 100% recycled PET. Thus,
complex and soiled plastics are very difficult or impossible to recycle.
c) Different from chemical catalyst, enzymatic catalyst offers several advantages such as: (1) not energy
intensive because reactions normally occur at room temperature, (2) insensitive to FFA content, (3)
easy recovery of catalyst and glycerol, and (4) minimize water-washing step that consequently reduce
wastewater
d) Oxidoreductases, transferases, hydrolases, lyases, ligases, and isomerases.
Ans. 3 Long Answer types Question [2X7.5=15]

a) Over the last 20 years, the use of supercritical fluid extraction research has increased in the field of
natural products. SFE methods have been used to harvest a large range of extracts from oils,
oleoresin, groups of bioactive compounds (alkaloids, terpenes, and phenolic) as well as single
compounds (α-humulene, lycopene and α-tocopherol). Solvent SCF offers a more selective and
environmentally sustainable alternative to traditional methods in natural products extraction; solvent
SCF-based extraction methods do not require organic solvents. In addition, solvent SFE may offer
improved selectively of bioactive extraction, while the use of ultrasonic-assisted
b) Sitagliptin—Sitagliptin, an antidiabetic compound, was successfully produced via biocatalytic
approach. It finds application in the treatment of type II diabe-tes and is sold under the trade name
“Januvia” by Merck. Boceprevir—This is a product of chiral amine synthesis and is marketed by
Merck under trade name Victrelis. It is used for the treatment of chronic hepatitis C infections.
