FARM LESSON:

NURSERY BED (Definition, Preparation, Sowing,

Maintenance, Hardening off, Transplanting and
Importance of a Nursery bed):

(a). DEFINITION:
A nursery bed is a small part of land prepared for
raising seedlings before transplanting them to the
field.

Thread: 1/12.
(b). PLANT CATEGORIES WHICH ARE BEST
RAISED IN A NURSERY BED:
1. Vegetable crops such as Cabbages, Eggplants,
Carrots, Tomatoes, etc.
2. Cash crops such as Coffee, Tea, Cocoa, etc.
3. Fruit trees such as Mangoes, Oranges, Ovacadoes,
Jackfruits, among others.

2/12.
(c). PROCEDURE OF NURSERY BED
PREPARATION:
1. Select the site and clear the land.
2. Measure a portion of 1m wide and any convenient
length.
3. Dig it well at least to a depth of 1ft so that stones
and roots lying underneath are dug out and thrown
outside the nursery.

3/12.
4. Mix the soil with farmyard manure to raise the
fertility level of the soil. Wood ash can also be added
to correct the acidity of soil and keep away worms.
5. Water the bed thoroughly and mulch it with dry
grass. Leave it to rest for atleast 72 hours before
sowing.

4/12.
(d). SOWING:
1. Use the spacing of 15cm between rows when
sowing the seeds and cover them with a light layer of
the soil.
2. Immediately after sowing, mulch the bed with dry
grass again. The bed should keep covered with
mulches until germination.

5/12.
(e). MAINTENANCE:
1. Water the bed regularly.
2. Remove the mulch only after germination.
2. Provide enough shade to the crop after germination.
The shade should be 1m above the bed.
3. Thin the crops properly, remove weak or diseased
seedlings and keep the bed weed-free.

6/12.
(f). HARDENING OFF:
Remove the shade and reduce water gradually,
atleast three days before transplanting. This gives the
seedlings a chance to get used to the open-field
environmental conditions.

7/12.
(g). TRANSPLANTING:
Transplant the seedlings after 21–30 days.
NOTE:
(i). The nursery bed should be watered thoroughly to
make the soil loose before uprooting the seedlings.
This helps to easily uproot the seedlings without
damaging their root systems.

8/12.
(ii). Transplanting should be done either early in the
morning or late in the evening (from 6:00am to
10:00am or 4:00 to 6:00pm) and plants should receive
water as soon as transplanting is done.

9/12.
(h). THE IMPORTANCE OF A NURSERY BED:
1. The primary purpose of a nursery bed is to
propagate and grow plants for sale to the public.
2. Nurseries help to preserve and protect rare and
endangered plant species by propagating and growing
them in a controlled environment.

10/12.
3. Nurseries help to get healthy plants of the right size
at the right time.
4. Plant nurseries provide employment and contribute
to the economy by selling plants and gardening
supplies to the public.
