Projectile Motion - it is a form

of motion where an object moves

MOTION
Horizontally Launched Projectile

Projectile - an object undergoing

projectile motion

Trajectory - the arc/curve-like

motion-path undergone by a projectile.

NOTE: Projectile motion consists of horizontal and vertical motion

working independently.

Horizontal Motion (X-Component)

❖ Neglect air resistance.
❖ There is a constant horizontal velocity (Vx)
❖ Horizontal acceleration is zero.
❖ The horizontal distance is RANGE (dx)

Vertical Motion (Y-Component)

❖ The force acting upon this motion is the force of gravity. (g = ay = ag)
g = -9.8 m/s2
❖ Vertical velocity is not constant. (Vy)
❖ We call the vertical distance as the HEIGHT. (h = dy)
Sample Problem #1

A marble is thrown horizontally from a tabletop with

a velocity of 1.50 m/s. The marble falls 0.70m away
from the table’s edge.

Find the following:

1. How high is the table?
2. What is the final velocity of the marble just
before it hits the cup?
Solution:

1. How high is the table?

2. What is the final velocity of the marble just before it hits the cup?

PROJECTILE MOTION.
Angle Launched Projectile

● The projectile rises (Point A to B) the vertical velocity decreasing, this is

because the direction of gravity is opposite to the projectile motion.
● As the projectile reaches the maximum height (Point B), it momentarily
stops causing a vertical velocity equals to zero (Vy=0)
● When it turns back to the ground (Point B to C) it agrees to the direction of
gravitational force hence vertical velocity is increasing.

SAMPLE PROBLEM:

1. A baseball player leads off the game

and hits among home run. The ball
leaves the bat at an angle of 25
degrees with a velocity of 30 m/s.

a. What is the maximum height reached

by the ball?
b. What is the horizontal displacement (range) of the ball?
