COLOR CODING FOR PIPING MATERIAL PAGE 3 OF 13
10040-00-131-ES-0008 REV.: 00
1. PURPOSE
The purpose of this document is to define a guideline for manufacturers, in order to mark
manufactured elements in a way that prevent confusions while selecting different types of
materials.
In the execution of the project, a range of different materials, including Carbon Steel,
Stainless Steels and other alloy Steels, it´s going to be used, making necessary to
discriminate between them, between their grades and even between specific services where
they going to be used.
2. SCOPE
This specification covers the identification color-coding of piping materials, which shall be
This specification shall be applied to color coding of piping materials such as pipes, fittings,
flanges, gaskets and bolts. Other piping elements, valves, accessories or specialties, which
have an item number or special commodity number, shall be provided with identification
plates to indicate these numbers and product description.

5.2 Each contractor, vendor and pipe spool fabricator shall identify materials as described in
this specification. Materials identified with physical damaged or non-conforming
(specifications), segregated or controlled and tracked “Quarantine Area” shall be established
(marked)(Ref. Schedule” under Sec.7.5 Control of Non-Conformance.)
5.3 Piping components shipped individually to the jobsite shall be identified as indicated in
5.1. Material identification shall not be required for pipe spools that have been verified by the
shop and have mark piece numbers associated with them.
5.4 Storage of fittings materials shall be properly color-coded, marked and otherwise
uniquely identified, labelled and traceable to the Certificate of Material Test Reports
(CMTR’s).
6.1.1 Material color coding has been developed to distinguish between various grades or
specifications of material. Table 1 identifies the most common grades of material used in
piping systems.
The color coding system for material identification described here, it´s intended to help
prevent fabricators from using incorrect alloy material. The principal purpose of color coding
for piping is to identify element´s material during storage and after components have been cut
for fabrication.
(Ref. SAES-A-206 para.14.2.1)
6.1.2 Color markings are assigned on the basis of nominal chemical compositions.
6.1.3 Location of marking shall be as follows (See details on Figure 1):
a. Pipe shall be marked with, for example, paint, dye, or tapes for its full length
b. Flanges shall be banded on the back of the flange at the intersection of the back face
and the hub.
c. Fittings shall be stripped from bevel to bevel.
c. Spiral Wound Gaskets shall be marked on their sides with 1, 2, or 3 stripes depending on
rating. They shall be marked as well as per color-coding indicated on ASME B16.20. Sheet
type gaskets do not require color-coding. (Ref. Schedule Q attachment IV para.4.2 &
SAES-A-206 para 14.2.8)
e. Stud bolt shall be color marked both ends. Machine bolt shall be marked on head. Nut
shall be marked on one side.
Product Marking should be readable after color coding.
f. Miscellaneous material shall be color marked in order to provide proper identity
g. The paint shall not cover welded surfaces, heat marks, or any other identification

minimum width. The color-coding on valves should indicate the valve body material (Ref.
SAES-A-206 para.14.2.6).
If manufacturer considers the mark it´s not easily legible, it shall revert to CONTRACTOR in
order to define the acceptable color-coding for materials not found on Table-2 (e.g. valves).
