Conventions Used in This Guide


To enable you to use the information in this guide effectively, you need to understand the
conventions used in the guide to represent different types of information.

 Buttons on the screen are represented as the button text in bold within square brackets.
For example: Click on [OK].

 Keys on the keyboard are represented as bold lettering in between <> characters.
For example: Press <Enter>.

 Menu options are represented as a path with the main and sub menus in Bold and
Capitalised and separated with ►.
For example: Select File ► Open.

 Field names are represented as bold text. And the value to be entered will be represented
by Bold Text.
For example: Enter the value 50 in the Offset field. Or

Denotes an M1 Click

Denotes an M2 Click

 This is a note. It contains useful or additional information.


 This is a reference. It directs you to another part of the user guide.

This is a thought box. It is generally used in exercises and contains a question for
you to consider.

 This is a warning, it contains information that you must not ignore.

Introduction
This tutorial introduces 2D Drawing. This is an important tool for design engineers and commercial
designers.
Most engineering drawings start or are heavily influenced by 2D Drawings. Arguably the most
important or useful benefit of 2D drafting is to create engineering drawings with speed and efficiency.

Overview of the lesson


 The following Exercise will use some of the drafting capabilities of Visi and teach
you techniques to create the following drawing.

 When a command is selected in Visi, the Left-hand menu offers a wide range of
options relative to that command, During the exercise we will become familiar with
some of these options.

Exercise 1- Create the outer shape


1. Press the F2 key on the keyboard or click on the top view icon from the HUD toolbar.

1. Select Wireframe►Sketch lines CTRL+L

2. Select the Point environment Icon and then the enhanced pick from the Left-hand
menu.

3. Hover the cursor over the origin and select it with M1 Click

4. Drag the cursor to the left-hand side and enter a dimension of 275mm into the highlighted
box and press enter.

 You can cycle through Dimensional and angular options by pressing the TAB key on the
keyboard

5. Snap on the left hand of the line and drag the Cursor upwards, then enter a value of
180mm and press Enter.

6. Snap the cursor on the newly created element and drag toward the right, enter a distance
of 200mm Press Enter to confirm.

7. Snap on and move the cursor downwards and enter the value of 75mm.

8. Snap on and move the cursor towards the right then75 enter a value of 75mm.

9. To complete the outer shape, snap the cursor onto the work plane origin.

 The resulting geometry is completed.

Exercise 2- Add the Chamfers and Fillets


1. Activate Wireframe►Segment/line►Chamfer from the Pulldown menu.

2. Hover the cursor over the external corner and it will highlight the 2 edges shown in the
picture below.

3. M1 click on the corner and fill in the value of 20mm in the First distance, preview and
confirm to create the chamfer.

4. Now move the cursor over the external corner in the bottom right area of the drawing to
highlight the two edges shown below.

 You can also pick the edges individually instead of both at once

5. M1 click and type a value of 25mm in the first distance box and apply.
The resulting chamfers shown below.

1. Select Wireframe►Circle/Arc-Fillet

2. Again, just like the Chamfer command, hover over the corner to highlight both edges at
one.

 You can also pick the edges individually instead of both at once
Create a fillet with a radius of 20mm and then click the preview button then the Apply button.

3. Add the three other fillets following the same process to achieve the results below

 You can confirm most commands in Visi by M2 click instead of the Apply/Ok Buttons

4. Below is the drawing now the chamfer and fillets have been added.

Exercise 3- Create the inner triangle shape


 For this exercise we will draw a number of “Construction lines” to aid the creation of
the triangle.
1. Select Wireframe►Segment/Line►Parallel

2. Highlight over the line at the base of the Outer shape and M1 click

3. Enter 15mm into the Distance and activate Line, check the preview and confirm.

4. Now Highlight and M1 click on the left vertical line of the outer shape and set a distance
of 50mm.

 Check the reverse side on to position the new line correctly.

5. Highlight and M1 click on the newly created vertical line and draw a new line at a
distance of 100mm using the same process used for the previous lines.

The result is shown above.


6. Select Wireframe►Segment/Line►Element Angle Line

7. M1 click on the Bottom left intersection and choose the X Axis as the reference
Direction, M2 Click to confirm this.

8. Set the Angle to 45 and confirm the command.

9. Now repeat this command at the opposite Intersection and draw a 45-degree angle line
again.

 You may have to cycle through the Display results to achieve the correct Angle line.

10. Select Edit►Break Direct then highlight and M1 click on the Horizontal Line.

Notice that the line is trimmed to leave the inner part of the segment.

11. Repeat this process on the two 45-degree angled lines to achieve the result below.

12. Select Wireframe►Segment/Line►Delete all lines

 This is a useful command to quickly delete all unwanted Construction lines

The result is shown above.


13. Select Wireframe-Circle/Arc-Fillet.

14. Hover over and M1 click on the corner shown above.

15. Enter a Value of 10mm in the Dialog box, move your cursor back into the splash screen
and M2 click. This will confirm the Fillet

16. Use the same for the remaining two Fillets.

17. Select Wireframe►Circle/Arc-Centre Radius


18. From the left-hand menu, Activate Centre of a circle/Arc.

19. Touch the radius at the top of the triangle with the cursor and M1 click.

20. Enter a value 5mm in the Radius box and apply.

21. Repeat this process for the remaining two fillets.

The resulting Geometry.

Exercise 4- Create the T slot group

 The following exercise will create the T slot group, as there are one or more
identical elements, we will use some of the editing commands to copy and
reposition the elements.

1. Select Wireframe►Circle/Arc-Centre Radius

 This command may still be active from the previous objective

2. M1 click on the insert points co-ordinates icon from the left-hand menu and enter
(X-225, Y160).

3. Click Ok to confirm, then enter a radius of 5mm in the dialog and confirm to create the
circle.

4. Now create another 5mm circle on using coordinates (X-240, Y1 30)

5. To create the third circle, enter the coordinates (X -210, Y130) and then click OK to
accept a radius of 5mm.

6. Click on the cancel button from the top of the Graphics area

7. The resulting 3 circles are shown above.


8. Select Wireframe►Segment/line-element element
9. Select the Element Icon from the left-hand menu.

11. M1 Click at the top portion of the circle shown below.

12. Now M1 click at the top of the next circle and create a segment line between them.

 When creating a Segment/Line between to elements, depending on where you pick the
element can impact on the tangency to the next element.

Repeat the process to create a line between the bottom halves of the 2 circles.

13. Now create the 2 lines from the top circle to the elements as shown below.

14. Exit out of the command, the shape below is created.


15. Select Edit ►Break direct from the Pull-down menu.

16. Remove all of the geometry not required to achieve the result below.

Select Edit-Translation from the Pull-down menu.


17. Drag a window around the T-slot to highlight it.

Remember, there are two types of window you can use to select geometry.

18. Now select the Incremental translation icon from the left-hand menu then enter 50mm in
the X axis and select 2 copies as shown below.

19. The result of the translation is shown below.

 The next objective is to copy the three T slots into a mirrored position, firstly we will
create a reference point to Mirror from.

 Select Wireframe►Segment/Line-Parallel

20. M1 click the line as shown below

21. Enter a distance of 60mm, Use the reverse side to achieve the correct destination of the
line, click on the apply button to confirm.

The Parallel line is created. This will be used as a reference to mirror the T-slots.

22. Select Edit►Mirror

23. Select the Icon copy elements from the left-hand menu.

24. Then drag a window around the 3 T slot shapes.

25. With the Enhanced pick option selected, M1 click anywhere on the line.

26. Select the X axis from the left-hand menu and confirm with M2 click, this will achieve
the result below.

 Use the delete function to remove the parallel line as this is no longer required.
The mirrored result is shown below.

Exercise 5 - Create the set of holes.


1. Select Wireframe►Set of points►Matrix
Select the Insert point coordinates from the left-hand menu.

2. Enter the dimension (X-80, Y 25) and confirm the OK button.

3. Define the Matrix parameters as shown below and preview the matrix on the screen.

4. Confirm with the Apply button, the result in the next picture is displayed.

5. Select Wireframe►Set of points►Copy onto set.

6. M1 click the set of points.

7. Now select a circle from the triangle.

8. To select the application point, select the Centre of a Circle/Arc option from the left-hand
menu.

9. Hover the cursor over the edge of the circle and M1 click on it.

10. The circle will have copied multiple times over the set of points.

11. After following this tutorial, the drawing is created below.

Exercise 6 - Annotation of the drawing

 In this stage we are going to annotate the drawing .A preview image of what we
could expect to achieve in this step, is displayed below.

1. Select Annotation►Single-element and select the Points icon and Intersection


icon.

2. M1 click on the WPL origin.


3. M1 click the end intersection of the segment.

12. Drag and place the dimension with M1 click onto the workspace.

The first annotation is created.


13. Now Switch the Picking environment to Element.

14. M1 click on the radius shown below.

15. Again, drag and place the dimension with M1 click onto the workspace

1. Select Annotation►Angular Dimension

2. M1 click the two elements shown below.

3. Drag and position the Dimension with M1 click to produce the angular dimension shown
below.

Drawing a Centre axis of a circle


1. Select Annotation►Cross
2. Select the Block control option from the left-hand menu.

3. Now pick the three circles in turn.

 Ask your Tutor to explain Block Control if you are unsure

4. M2 Click to proceed to the next step

Dimensional crosses have been created on all three circles.

Using what we have learned try to fully dimension the drawing in a similar fashion to
the original specification.

 Remember that switching between Elements and Points can give different style
dimensions.

Student Lesson- Creation of “Clip” Symbol


1. Using the Knowledge gathered from the tutorial try to create this simple clip. This drawing
can be used later on in the Visi training manual.
2. Save the file using: - FILE – SAVE AS… then change “Save as type” to VISI Symbols
(*.sym). The default folder for symbols is C:\VISI2018R2\Library\Eng\Cad\Symbolf

 Ask your tutor to explain about “Symbols”

Over the next few pages are some 2D drawings to draft and Dimension, try out
some new Annotation commands.

 Ask your tutor to explain the many other Annotation commands, alternatively press the
F1 Key to open the Help.
