APPENDIX TO THE AIRCRAFT FLIGHT MANUAL FOR THE Mi-8MTV HELICOPTER

SECTION 8
SYSTEM AND EQUIPMENT OPERATION.
Section 8.14 «Radio-navigational equipment».
8.14.10 Integrated Navigational System GNS-430.
8.14.10 .1. Intended use.
GNS-430 equipment is a radio-electrical integrated GPS (global positioning
system) navigational system device. In the helicopter, the system provides pilots
with precise navigational data, received from the GPS receiver, and short-range
navigation for a precision landing approach under instrument flying conditions rules.
The main function of the equipment is the acquisition of signal from the
satellite system GPS, receiving of the orbital data, measuring the distance based on
the Doppler frequency shift, and processing such data in real-time mode for the
acquisition of data on location, speed and time.
The integral database in the form of a replacement flexible disc (NAV DATA)
bears the international database with the information on airports and non-directional
beacons, and the intersection points of the air routes.
DATABASE IS RECOMMENDED TO BE UPDATED EVERY 28 DAYS.
The main function of the VOR/ILS receiver is the reception and signal
detection (demodulation) of the signals of the VOR beacon, localizer beacon, and
glide path beacon.
GNS-430 equipment coupled with the diastimeter KN-62A, and the horizontal
situation indicators Gi-106A and KI-206, is a complete navigational system,
operating in “VOR” and “ILS” modes.

- Course line deviation;

- Landing course line deviation;
- Glide path line deviation;
- To/from radio beacon flight direction.
Electrical power supply for the GNS-430 equipment and the HIS is sustained
with the DC current of +27V from the battery bus through CB GNS and NIS
respectively, located on the left CB panel.

Power/Volume COM (communication transceiver)

Power/Volume COM (communication transceiver) knob turns the unit power on and
regulates the volume level of the communication transceiver. If pressed quickly, it
switches on/off the automatic scheme of silent tuning.
VLOC volume
VLOC volume level knob regulates the sound level for a selected VOR(omnidirectional
radio beacon)/LOC(landing localizer radio beacon) frequency. If pressed quickly, it
switches on/off the signaling tone of source detection.

COM Trigger. COM trigger button switches between active and standby COM
frequencies. Press and Hold until the emergency channel is selected (121.500 MHz).

VLOC Trigger. VLOC trigger button switches between active and standby VLOC
frequencies (i.e. makes the selected standby frequency active).
Horizontal range (map scale).
Range button (∆ RNG ∇) selects the map scale.
Direct to. «Direct to» accesses function DIRECT TO (ПРЯМО НА), enabling the input
of a waypoint as a destination, and sets the direct course toward the selected point of
destination.
Menu. Menu button (MENU) displays context-dependent list of options. List of options
accesses additional functions and enables changing of settings, connected to the displayed
page.

Enter. Enter button (ENT) confirms an action or a completion of data input.

Clear. Clear button (CLR) deletes information or cancels data input. Press and Hold to
directly indicate NAV page (navigational information), set by default.

Big Right Knob. Big Right Knob (CRSR) changes between discrete groups of pages: NAV
(navigational information), WPT (waypoints), AUX or NRST. Providing the display cursor
is active, the Big Right Knob may be used to move the cursor up and down.

Small Right Knob. Small Right Knob (CRSR) changes between pages of the same group
of pages listed above. If pressed quickly, the display cursor appears. The cursor enables the
data input and/or selection from the list of options.

Executive Procedure button (PROC) enables the selection of the procedures for the landing
approach, departure and arrival from the active flight plan.
Flight Plan button (FPL) enables creating, editing, activating and changing the order of
flight plans, as well as provides access to the procedures for the landing approach, departure
and arrival.
Messages button (MSG) enables the viewing of system messages and the annunciation of
important warnings and requirements.
OBS button enables manual or automatic setting of the order of waypoints. If pressed, the
OBS mode is selected, with it maintaining the “active to” waypoint as a navigational
reference point. Always, when the OBS mode is selected, it is available to set the desired
course to/from a waypoint via OBS page or external OBS selector in HSI or CDI KI-204.

CDI button is a switch, depending on which navigational information source (GPS or

VLOC) provides the output signal to the external HSI (ПНП) or CDI (course deviation
indicator).
Small Left Knob. Small Left Knob enables the setting of standby frequency (kHz) of the
COM transceiver or VLOC receiver, depending on which one is selected with the setting
cursor. If pressed quickly, the setting coursor switches between COM and VLOC windows.

Big Left Knob. Big Left Knob enables the setting of standby frequency (MHz) of COM
transceiver or VLOC receiver, depending on which one is currently selected with the setting
cursor.

8.14.10.4. Equipment GNS-430 function check before flight.

CAUTION! Before starting the engines, ensure that knob «C» (PWR
VOL) of the GNS-430 system is in the leftmost position (GNS-430 is switched off).
On the left CB panel, turn on the GNS, HSI and COMM circuit breakers, and
then:
- Turn on the equipment by turning the © knob clockwise. After the self-
check procedure, the display shows the welcome page and the ground
surface data page (fig. 4.14.10.3.). Blinking indicator «OK ?» in

206 show the same readings: indicator localizer bar tilts left and
indicator glide path bar tilts halfway upward.
- After the check, press ENT button.
The display will show satellites condition page. Satellite Signal Intensity will
be displayed as a histogram.
Upon the connection of the GNS-430 to the satellites and location
determination, the current location page will be displayed automatically.
VOR/LOC receiver check.
Turn on the circuit breakers DME on the left CB panel and intercom.

Turn on the VLOC receiver on the GNS-430 equipment, i.e. turn on the GNS-
430, select the NAV page group by holding the CLR button, select NAV page, and
select VOR frequency in the range of 40 nautical miles, by moving the cursor to the
VLOC window by quickly pressing PUSH CV button. Then turn Big and Small Left
Knobs for frequency setting, and press ENT. Select the frequency by pressing .
Listen to the VOR beacon call through the headset with the VOR-DME toggle
on the central instrument panel in the VOR position.
Using OBS selector on the HSI Gi-106 put the vertical (course) bar in the zero
position and note down the beacon radial.
Use console KN-62A to put the switch RMT-FREQ-GS/T in the RMT
position.
The range-finding device will display the current readings of the distance to
the radio beacon, ground speed and path time to the radio beacon.
Note the readings of the distance to the radio beacon, ground speed and path
time to the radio beacon. Ensure that the radial and the distance readings match the
location of the parking area in relation to the VOR/DME beacon.
In case of receiving error information, the display may show line symbols
instead of the current readings.
Listen to the DME beacon call through the headset telephone, having switched
the VOR-DME on the central instrument panel in the DME position. Turn off the
equipment and the circuit breakers.
Flight execution.
Flight is executed in compliance with the manual for pilots on GNS-430, after
the familiarization with the manual and ground practice with the control units of
GNS-430.
