Flat Panel Display System (FPDS)

The FPDS upgrade consists of a pilot and copilot Primary Flight Display/Navigation Display (PFD/ND) suite, containing four (4) 6” x 8” Display
Units (DU) and two (2) Display Control Panels (DCP) located in the forward center pedestal and three (3) 6 MCU Data Concentrator Units
(DCU) installed in the electronics bay.

Architecture

The standard Primary Flight Display/Navigation Display (PFD/ND) format is based on industry standards and aligns the IS&S flight deck with new aircraft
in production. Because of the available display area of the IS&S display units, the design goes a step further and provides the ability for flight crews to
select expanded or centered (360 degree compass rose) information of the PFD unit. This feature allows pilots to select flight information, map,
weather, traffic and terrain data for display on one or both primary flight displays to safely and efficiently fly an aircraft. This approach is certified with
Level C dispatch relief approval, as detailed in the FAA Minimum Equipment List (MEL), to allow or three day (Extended Twin-Engine Operations) ETOPS
or ten day Non-ETOPS relief to continue operating the aircraft with a display or a display control panel failed. In the event of a PFD failure, the PFD image
is automatically driven to the ND display without any pilot action necessary

Overview

The PFD presents a dynamic colour display of all parameters necessary for flight path control. Indications on the PFD are airspeed, attitude, altitude,
vertical speed, and heading/track and/or map information.

Flight Mode Annunciations and AFDS status are displayed on the top of the PFD. PFD data
sources include, the Inertial Reference Units, Air Data Computers, the Flight Management
System, the Stall Warning Computer and the Autopilot
Flight Director System.

Airspeed
The airspeed indication is a moving tape that displays current indicated airspeed at all times.
Thirty knots is the lowest indicated value. Current Mach is displayed at airspeeds greater
than 0.4 mach. A speed trend vector show predicted airspeed in ten seconds, based on the
current acceleration or deceleration rate.

The MCP and IAS/MACH controls are located on the glareshield. The IAS/MACH selector changes the window setting, selected speed readout and bug
position.

When the selected speed is off scale, the partially hidden bug is parked at the top or bottom of the tape.

The IAS/MACH select switch changes the displays from IAS to mach. The display toggles from IAS at airspeeds greater than 0.4 mach.

Attitude
The attitude indication is like other attitude indicators, but with enhancements to some items. The bank pointer indicates bank relative to the bank
scale. A slip/skid indicator is located beneath the bank pointer. With large deflections, the indication fills until the slip or skid is reduced.

At bank angles beyond 35 degrees, the pointer fills and turns amber until bank angle is reduced.
Speed Reference Settings

The Speed Reference Switch SPD REF is used to set the V Speeds for Takeoff and Approach located on the top centre
of the Display Control Panel (DCP). V Speed data is weight on wheels sensitive and manual setting of approach speeds
on the ground or takeoff speeds in the air is prohibited.

During preflight, the NO V SPD flag is displayed until takeoff reference speeds are entered either manually through
Display Control Panel SPD REF selector or through the FMC MCDU. The TAKEOFF REF page shows the reference speeds.

Anytime speeds are entered via the MCDU, the airspeed indication window will revert to three white dashes for each
setting. The NO VSPD flag is removed after all three speeds are selected.

In order to get the MCDU airspeed value to display on the airspeed tape requires the SPD REF selector to be cycled
from APP to TO back to APP. Upon completion of this step the V1 and VR values provided by the FMC will be displayed
on the airspeed window. V2 and Vref data require manual data entry using the SPD REF selector.

The Speed Reference Switch SPD REF is used to set the V Speeds for Takeoff and Approach located on the Display
Control Panel (DCP). When the SPD REF switch is selected to TO, the SPD REF values appear in white. As V Speed data is selected and entered into the
DCP SET switch the V speed value turn green. After each Takeoff or Approach value is set, the system can be reset by cycling the SPD REF selector to the
opposite mode and back.

When using the Speed Reference Switch SPD REF to set the Approach, the selection of VREF will automatically calculate the +/- 40 and +/- 80 Flaps
Maneuvering Speed bugs. V Speed data is weight on wheels sensitive and Approach speeds can not be set on the ground.

The V speed reference window displays the VSpeed values that have been set. As speed increases for takeoff, indivdual speeds bugs display, and move
with the airspeed tape. The V1 and VR bugs are removed after liftoff. The V2 bug remains displayed until the DCP SPD REF selector switch is moved to
the takeoff TO position.
Altitude
The altitude indication is also a moving tap that displays current barometric altitude.

Selected altitude, and the selected altitude but, correspond to the current MCP altitude
window setting. When the selected altitude is off scale, the partially hidden bug is parked at
the top or bottom of the tape. Only selected altitude is controlled through the MCP. Other
altitude-related indications are controlled through the Display Control Panel (DCP). The
meters switch displays metric altitudes on the altitude indication. Metric displays are available
for current and selected altitudes.

The barometric reference selector is used to switch the barometric reference between inches
of mercury and hectpascals. The barometric selector controls the barometric setting. The
barometric standard switch selects the standard barometric setting. The standard switch is
selected a green STD annunciation is displayed. When STD is displayed, a local altimeter
setting can be preselected, by rotating the barometric selector. The preselected value is
located below STD.and becomes the new barometric setting and replaces STD when the STD
button is pressed again. Without a preselected setting, the last setting, before STD was
selected, is redisplayed.
The Altitude light provides an alert when approaching the selected MCP altitude. At 750 feet prior to altitude acquisition, the light illuminates, and then
extinguishes within 250 feet of the selected altitude. Should an altitude deviation occur, an altitude alert light will illuminate at 250 feet from the
selected altitude. In addition the ALTITUDE ALERT EICAS message will be displayed, both Master Caution lights will illuminate and the caution aural
warning will sound. The alert is cancelled when the aircraft returns to within 250 feet of the selected altitude, or if a new MCP altitude is selected.

Vertical Speed
Current vertical speed is indicated by a vertical speed pointer against a scale.

When the vertical speed exceeds 500 feet per minute, up or down, a digital readout displays in the center of the scale with an arrow pointing in the
direction.

Controls for vertical speed are located on the MCP. The V/S switch engages the vertical speed mode. A selected vertical speed bug is also displayed at
the current MCP setting. The bug remains as long as vertical speed is engaged.
HSI
The lower portion of each PFD is a Horizontal Situation Indicator (HSI). The HSI has four
primary display modes available – approach (APR), VOR, MAP and PLAN. The Centre DCP
switch toggles the PFD HSI between expanded and centred modes. Approach, VOR, MAP and
Plan can all be displayed in centred mode. The centre switch is operative when plan mode is
selected and provides a basic HSI presentation with associated bearing pointer information
available.
Navigation Displays
The Navigation Display is normally located on the inboard display units. Two primary display
modes are available – MAP and PLAN.

The ND presents a selectable, color display of flight progress in either Map or Plan Modes.
MAP Mode is the Default. Map Mode Allows Overlays of Data and Weather as Selected on the
DCP. Terrain Information can also be displayed from the EGPWS. Map items common to other
airplanes are active waypoint information, full time range display, position trend vector during
turns, an altitude range arc during climbs and descents, and VNAV path deviation.

The position trend vector is displayed on the expanded modes. The vector is displayed from
the track line when the aircraft begins a turn. The amount of displacement is based on aircraft
position, ground speed and bank angle. When expanded range is set to 40 miles or more, the
three segments represent three thirty second intervals equaling 90 seconds. With range set at
20 miles only two segments are displayed. Only one segment is displayed with a range of 10
miles.
ND heading is supplied by the Inertial Reference Units or IRUs. True airspeed is supplied from the selected Air Data Computer. Ground speed, wind
and heading are calculated by the selected IRU.

Expanded view of some of the features. The VNAV path deviation scale and pointer indicate up to 400 feet deviation. A readout appears when
deviation is 420 feet or more. The indication is in view during VNAV descents as long as a valid descent path exists. The display is removed after
passing the End of Descent point, or when either glideslope or flare mode engages.

The altitude range arc shows where the MCP selected altitude will be reached. It is always displayed centered across the track line. Arc position is
calculated by the FMC using groundspeed and vertical speed. The flight crew can control arc position by adjusting one or both speeds.

Notice that range information is now displayed. Range is shown in any of the expanded modes. The range number on the display equals one-half the
actual range setting of the DCP.

Plan mode displays non-moving map information, but is always oriented to true North. The Plan Mode can Only be Displayed on the Nav Display.
Weather, Terrain, Windshear, and TCAS Data Cannot be Displayed in Plan Mode. When Plan is Selected on DCP, the basic HSI with bearing pointer
information remains on the PFD HSI

Additional data may be displayed on by using the MAP switches. Multiple switches can be selected simultaneously.
