In the modern era, resources such as food, water, shelter and clothing have become commodities in our

society. One cannot simply live without these necessities, thus people often capitalize their monetary
gains in these business areas. However, information and data have also become a necessary commodity
in the modern business era or what other people call as the “digital age”. Data, in fact, has become the
irreplaceable and reliable commodity every store, business and organization. This resource is accessible
to almost every person on the planet, from gadgets to communication devices. The worth of data as a
“resource” was also magnified by the advancement of data science and technology, which gave birth to
the field of big data analytics. As the world’s technology and science advances and improves, the current
society becomes increasingly data-driven. Through this, many fields of study began to adapt and
incorporate data analysis, science and technology to improve efficiency of work, to automate and
revolutionize difficult processes precisely, and promote innovation through technology-driven processes.
Mechanical Engineering was one of those fields that adapted technology and data analytics. This article
aims to discuss the possible applications of the field of big data analytics in the course that I chose to
study here in Mapua University.

Mechanical Engineering is a branch of engineering that tackles the study of machines, engines, and
physical systems that move through forces and different kinds of movement. These engineers use
mathematics, physics and chemistry to able to analyze, create, manufacture and maintain various
physical machines and systems. Naturally, this includes the development of machine systems, creation of
robotic parts, measurements of substances and materials, the use of mechanical tools and machines to
produce precise and accurate products to be used in the field. In fact, mechanical engineering itself is
one of the oldest engineering branches. However, to keep up with the times, big data analytics is also
used in the modern practices of mechanical engineering. Here are some potential applications of big
data analytics in this branch of engineering. First, predictive maintenance and gathering of test data. Big
data analytics allows the gathering of the necessary data from using latest technology sensors in
machines and equipment. Using the data gathered, the engineers have the utmost potential to predict
failures, to schedule appropriate maintenance times and maximizing the cost of running, repairing and
mitigating unplanned problems of a specific machine system. In addition, mechanical engineers use big
data analytics to create brand new product designs using the data gathered on what is preferred in the
current market. An example of this data is customer feedback and quality control reviews. Factors such
as flaws in the product design, the maximization of all current functions installed, and improvement of
product quality, are the main factors that mechanical engineering greatly look and analyze at. This allows
engineers to further improve their craft from using the insights and comments given to them by the
customers. And lastly, data analytics will be used by mechanical engineers in the process of energy
conversion. The world is currently looking for a sustainable source of energy, and as technology
continues to develop, the need of data analytics to analyze this energy source is needed. This also ties
with the two applications of data analytics earlier, using the data gathered by energy readings by energy
sources, the engineers have the potential to improve the “sustainability” of an energy source by looking
at past energy readings and its current effects on the environment.

In conclusion, big data analytics has an essential role in today’s data-driven world. Many fields of study
have already adapted to the demands of today’s technological advances, mechanical engineering is no
exception. Big data analytics in mechanical engineering is used to predict the failure rates, the potential
maintenance repair dates of machines and allows the maximum potential functions of the maintenance,
cost to run and repair the machine system to be possible, through the use of latest technology sensors in
machine systems. This field also allows engineers to further improve their craft, through the gathering of
past data, such as customer reviews and preferences, current market trends, and product design
preferences. Product design flaws, and quality control is greatly emphasized in mechanical engineering,
and this allows engineers to improve and create brand new innovate products that can have an impact in
the automotive or any market. It also allow the potential to create new sustainable sources of energy
and further improve the current sources of energy to be more sustainable. In conclusion, big data
analytics allows mechanical engineering to predict maintenance and failure rates, and allows the
machine to work its full potential, and allows engineers to improve their crafts and the current energy
sources into more sustainable ways.
