PART A—(10 X 2 = 20 marks)

1. Define Heating and cooling time constant.


2. Give examples where continuous duty at constant load is required.
3. Draw the speed Torque characteristics of shunt and series motor.
4. What is Dynamic Braking and Plugging?
5. Write the merits and demerits of DOL starter.
6. What is the need of NVC in starter?
7. Why rotor resistance starter is not applicable in Squirrel cage Induction motor?
8. Write the applications of Ward Leonard speed control system and dc chopper.
9. Why Chopper based DC drives give better performance than rectifier controlled drives?
10. Compare VSI and CSI.

PART-B (65 MARKS)


11. (a) Describe the loading conditions and classes of duty of an electric motor.(13)

(b) Derive the expression for a thermal model of motor for heating and cooling. Also
draw the heating and cooling curve.(13)

12. (a) Explain with a neat circuit diagram, the different types of braking of DC shunt motor.
Also Sketch the braking characteristics.(13)

(b)Sketch the speed –torque characteristics of a three phase Induction motor and explain
its Motoring mode, generating mode and Braking mode of operation.(13)

13. (a) (i)With neat sketch explain three point starter.(8)


(ii) Find the percentage tapping required on an Auto transformer required for a
Squirrel cage motor against ¼ of full load torque. The short circuit current on
normal voltage is 5 times the full load current and full load slip is 2%.(5)

(b )(i)Draw and explain the Auto transformer starter.(8)
(ii) Find the starting torque of an Induction motor in terms of full load torque when
started by means of (a) Star delta starter (b) Auto transformer with 74.7% tapping.
The short circuit current of the motor at normal voltage is 5 times the full load
current and full load slip is 3%.(5)

14. (a) Explain the operation of single phase half and full converter fed separately excited DC
motor drives.(13)

diagram.(13)

15. (a) Explain the operation of different speed control techniques employed for 3 phase
squirrel cage Induction motor.(13)

(b) Explain how the speed of slip ring Induction motor is controlled by feeding back its
slip power to the mains.(13)

PART-C (15 Marks)

16.(a)(i)Explain field and Armature control method of speed control for DC shunt
motor.(10)

(ii) A 500V DC Shunt motor running at 700 rpm takes an Armature current of 50A
effective Armature resistance is 0.4 ohm. What resistance must be placed in series
with the Armature to reduce the speed to 600 rpm. The torque remaining constant.(5)

(b)Explain how v/f control of three phase induction motor is achieved using inverters.
