What is a
conjunction?
A conjunction is a word we use to
connect words, phrases, clauses,
and even sentences. (kata hubung
atau kata sambung)

ada tiga kata sambung yang


paling umum yaitu, and; or; but.
Types of
Conjunctions
In general, the functions of
conjunctions are,

addition: and impact: so...that


alternative: either...or purpose: in order that
contrast: but concession: even
conclusion: so, to sum up though
apposition: until manner: as
cause and effect: time: when
because
Coordinating
Conjunctions
We use them to join two units that are equal (setara). For
example a noun with another noun, verbs with verbs, adjectives
with adjectives and so forth. (menggabungkan 2 unit setara)

F - for (karena/untuk)
A - and (dan)
N - nor (tidak juga)
B - but (tetapi)
O - or (atau)
Y - yet (tetapi, meskipun begitu)
S - so (sehingga, maka)
Correlative conjunction
Correlative conjunctions are used in pairs to connect
alternatives or equal elements. (kata hubung yang
digunakan bersamaan untuk menggabungkan 2 elemen)

Either...or, neither...nor, not only...but also, not...but, as...so,


both...and, from...to, as much...as

Subordinating
Conjunctions
They function to link subordinate clauses
(dependent clauses) to main clauses (independent
clauses).

time (waktu): when, whenever, after, as soon as, still,


until, once
place (tempat): where, wherever
condition (kondisi/syarat): if, even if, provided that,
unless, otherwise, supposing
cause-effect (sebab-akibat): as, because, in order that,
since, so that
contrast (pertentangan): although, even though, while,
whereas
Once I arrive in Bali, I will explore the
beaches.
You can sit wherever you want to.
If not because of him, I wouldn't be here
right now.

Question
what is, function, and examples
What is a tag
question?
It is a statement followed by a mini-question.
We use tag questions to ask for confirmation.
In Indonesian we usually say kan?; benar kan?;
ya?; toh?
Sentence
Pattern~
Affirmative sentence + Negative Tag -> Affirmative Answer Expected
Negative sentence + Affirmative Tag -> Negative Answer Expected

She looks pretty, isn't she?


You won't go there, will you?
You came here by car, didn't you?
Rules of Tag questions
Use shall for an invitation sentence (usually starts with let's)
Let's go to the park, shall we?
Use aren't i in tags to mean i am not
I'm good at sport, am I not? (formal)
I'm good at sport, aren't I? (commonly spoken in English)
Use won't for polite request tags
You'll give me that thing, won't you?

Use mustn't with the modal must


This must be the rendezvous point, mustn't it?
there are 2 possible endings when have is the main verb
You have the tickets, haven't you?
You have the tickets, don't you?
Use will or would for imperative sentences (commands)
Just finish your task, will you?
Use pronouns for people, not proper names, in tag questions
Hans is pretty attractive, isn't he?
Use it when the sentence contains the words this or that
This is your novel, isn't it?
Use they when the sentence contains the words those or
these
These aren't your drawings, are they?
Use they when the sentence includes indefinite pronouns
(no one, nobody, someone, nobody, everyone)
everybody looks happy in this photo, don't they?
Someone took my notes yesterday, didn't they?
