About DeviceNet
Overview
DeviceNet is a serial communication protocol used to network industrial devices to eliminate labor intensive
and expensive point to point wiring schemes. It is based on the CAN (Controller Area Network) protocol.
Allen Bradley originally developed DeviceNet, but it is now supported by a multitude of manufacturers.
The ODVA (Open DeviceNet Vendor Association) is an independent organization that governs the
DeviceNet specification and oversees conformance testing for products, which will be used in a DeviceNet
system.
DeviceNet uses a powered 4-wire (plus shield) network and can have up to 64 nodes. The protocol can
transfer a maximum of 8 bytes of data per node cycle with three selectable communication (baud) rates of 125
Kbps, 250 Kbps, or 500 Kbps. Maximum distance is depended upon baud rate and cable media type. Refer to
the section below for details.
More information about DeviceNet and ODVA can be obtained from the ODVA web site www.odva.org

G2-2 Introduction
The G2-2 Series is a product line featuring a variety of valve configurations and electronic interface options.
This fieldbus manifold series is capable of addressing a total of 224 I/O. The manifold can be viewed as
having two sections to it, the Valve Side and the Discrete I/O Side. The Valve Side supports a maximum of
32 solenoid coils and the Discrete I/O Side supports a maximum of 6 modules totaling 192 Outputs, 96
Inputs, or various combinations. The DeviceNet communication module has two connectors: a 5-pin
communication connector and a 4-pin power connector. Pin-Outs for these, along with I/O connectors, are
labeled on the side of the respective modules and in the Discrete I/O module section of this document.
The Numatics, Inc. G2-2 DeviceNet node is designed to DeviceNet specification release 2.0 and supports
the following I/O Message types: Polled, Change of State (COS), Cyclic and Combinations (i.e. Outputs can
be set for Polled while Inputs can be set for COS for greater system response time).
This manual addresses the specifics of configuring and commissioning the Numatics G2-2 Series product
line configured with the DeviceNet communication interface. For more information relating to pneumatic
valving and valve manifold assemblies, please refer to the Numatics In Control Catalog.

G2-2 Electronics Modularity
Discrete I/O
The G2-2 Series product line is a completely modular system. As shown below, all of the G2-2 electronic
modules plug together, allowing easy assembly and field changes. Additionally, all the PC boards containing
active electronics (i.e. communication, I/O and MCM) are also modular allowing changes to be made
without the need to dismantle the manifold.
www.numatics.com/fieldbus
G2-2 Series DeviceNet Technical Manual
Pneumatic Valve Manifold
The pneumatic valve manifold is also modular. The valve solenoid coil connections are made automatically
using Z-Board™ technology (plug together PC boards which allow internal connection from solenoid coils to
output drivers without the use of wires). This allows easy assembly and field changes.

G2-2 Series DeviceNet Technical Manual
Distributing I/O with G2-2 Electronics
The G2-2 series fieldbus manifold allows its discrete I/O points to be distributed from the central manifold
by using various I/O modules (see pages 27-47). This distribution capability can be made at any time, even
after the manifold has been installed and commissioned, although, network or communication rack
configurations may be affected depending on the new total number of I/O points configured.
The distributed I/O points can be used for various input devices and loads with many different termination
options, including additional manifolds with Sub-D connector option.
Example of network to PLC with distributed valve manifolds and I/O devices.

Sub-base Connectors
Z-Board™ and Solenoid Coil Connections to Output Drivers
Z-Board™ plug together technology connects all valve solenoids to the valve coil output drivers, located
in the communication node. The valve solenoid coil output drivers are divided into 2 separate 16 bit
groups. Output group No. 1 is comprised of the first output word, bits 0-15, and output group No. 2 is
comprised of the second output word, bits 16-31. Output group No. 1 connects directly to the Z-
Boards™, while output group No. 2 is connected to Z-Boards™ via an internal ribbon cable or Valve Side
Sub-D. The first output connects to the “14” (A) solenoid on the valve closest to the communication
node. The 17th – 32nd solenoids interconnect via the Z-Boards™ to output group No. 2. For the
maximum capability of 32 solenoids on the same manifold, the 16th and 17th solenoid coils must NOT be
on the same sub-base.

Z-Board™ Connectors
The 2005/2012/2035 valve series utilizes 2 different Z-Boards™ designs to achieve the single and double
solenoid output functions that yield the possible 32 single, 16 double, or any combination of valve
solenoid coil output capabilities.

Self-Test Mode
An internal diagnostic tool can also be enabled using the optional MCM module. This tool allows the user to
confirm that all of the Inputs and Outputs on the manifold are fully functional without needing a network
connection or controller. There are two test modes that the user can choose using SW2-8. The “Output” test
mode tests all the outputs by sequentially turning them ON one at a time. The “Input/Output” test mode
tests the inputs by causing all of the outputs to toggle between even and odd values when any input is made.
To use the Self-Test Mode, the user must first set some initial conditions using the MCM module. Follow
these steps to obtain the needed initial condition settings. Remember to remove power from the manifold
before making changes to the MCM when setting these initial conditions.

The initial conditions are now set. To enable the Self-Test Mode, apply power to the manifold and make the
following changes while the module status LED is blinking (within 2 to 5 seconds of power up):
Once Self-Test Mode is enabled, the module status LED will flash red/green until Self-Test Mode is
terminated by removing power to the unit. Remember to return the MCM settings to their original settings to
return the communication node to normal operation.

Valve Side Digital Output Modules
The valve side output modules are used to distribute output points available in the node (i.e. when valves are
located away from the rest of the electronics). The 16 bit output modules make available the last 16 output
bits on the valve side of the manifold (bits 16-31). The 32 bit output module uses all of the valve side outputs
and enables the user to remotely locate pneumatic valve manifolds or other loads that require 24 VDC.

Analog I/O Modules
Analog I/O Module Rules
The analog I/O modules follow the same rules as the digital I/O modules. The maximum total number of
modules on the Discrete I/O side of the manifold is still 6. The analog boards allow the user to control
devices using an analog signal. The analog modules also allow the user to relay analog information from input
devices. These modules are available in three analog signal types: 0-5 V, 0-10 V, and 4-20 mA. These three
signal types are offered in two different I/O configurations: 2 Analog Inputs/ 2 Analog Outputs and 3 Analog
Inputs/ 1 Analog Output channels.

DeviceNet Configuration and Mapping
EDS File
The EDS file contains configuration information required to establish communication to a node on a
DeviceNet network. An EDS stub file is loaded into the communication node prior to shipment and can be
uploaded from the node with appropriate DeviceNet software (i.e. DeviceNet Manager, RS NetWorx, etc…).
There are two EDS file’s available for download, for the G2-2 series, the standard and the extended version.
The standard EDS file contains all parameters except the idle and fault action parameters. This allows
efficient use of ADR function. The extended EDS file includes the idle and fault action parameters. These
EDS files are available on the Numatics, Inc., website at www.numatics.com/fieldbus.

User Configurable Device Parameters
The Numatics’ G2-2 DeviceNet node allows the user to set many user options which define how the
manifold behaves in certain instances. The following is a description of these device parameters. All of these
configurable parameters can be adjusted using appropriate DeviceNet configuration software
(i.e. RSNetWorx, DeviceNet Manager, etc…) selecting “Device Parameters” in the node properties screen, or
by initiating the explicit messaging function. Some parameters can also be adjusted using the optional
Manual Configuration Module (MCM) see pages 22 thru 26.
User configurable parameters are described in the following table (applicable for EDS File Ver. 2.11 or
greater). All of the following values are given in decimal format.

Explicit messages provide multi-purpose, point-to-point communication paths between two devices. These
messages use the typical request/response-oriented network communication used to perform node configuration
and problem diagnosis. Explicit messages typically use low priority identifiers and contain the specific meaning
of the message as part of the data field; including the service to be performed and the specific object attribute
address. Each explicit message uses a four level address; Node Address (MAC ID), Object Class Identifier,
Instance and Attribute.

Output Status During Idle/Fault - Parameters
These parameters are used to describe characteristics or behaviors of specific output points (bits). The
parameters shown below are used to determine what state a particular output will have, during an “Idle”
event (i.e. PLC is put into “Program” mode) or a “Fault” event (i.e. communication is interrupted). The
output Idle and Fault parameters allow individual control of any and each output point on the manifold.
The user, through configuration software or explicit messages, can determine how a specific output behaves
when a fault or idle actions occurs. These settings are non-volatile and thus will not change upon loss of
power.
www.numatics.com/fieldbus
G2-2 Series DeviceNet Technical Manual
Idle Action Sequence
Idle Action and Idle Value attributes determine the output state if the device encounters an Idle Event.
An Idle Event is defined as a transmitted message with no application I/O data, for example, this could
occur if the PLC is put into program mode.
The process for determining the output state during an Idle Action is as follows:
www.numatics.com/fieldbus
G2-2 Series DeviceNet Technical Manual
Fault Action Sequence
Fault Action and Fault Value attributes determine the output state if the device encounters a Fault Event. A
Fault Event is defined as one or more of the I/O communication connections timing out. This could be
caused by, failure of the master, or problems with the network communication and/or wiring.
The process for determining the output status during a Fault Action is as follows:
www.numatics.com/fieldbus
G2-2 Series DeviceNet Technical Manual
Setting Idle and Fault Parameters
The user can set the Idle and Fault Parameters by the use of RSNetworx for DeviceNet and the “Extended”
Numatics’ EDS file. The process for setting the Idle and Fault parameters is as follows.

G2-2 Series DeviceNet Technical Manual
Assembly Parameter (User Configurable Parameter No. 2)
The Assembly Parameter is a user configurable option that allows the user to allocate the number of valve
solenoid coil drivers, which are configured to the valve side of the manifold. This allows the user to optimize
the I/O size (Rx/Tx) to meet any application requirement. The Assembly Parameter can be set via DIP
switch SW1 Bit 6-8 (with node firmware Revision 2.7 or above, see page 22). Alternately, the Assembly
Parameter can be easily set (in all node firmware revision levels) with appropriate DeviceNet Software (i.e. RS
NetWorx, DeviceNet Manager, etc…), or by sending an explicit message to the device: (Send a set service to
the Assembly Class (4), Instance (100), Data Attribute (3) using the Assembly Parameter Data in the following
table). Refer to page 49 for more Explicit Messaging Info.
The total number of Status Input bits will be affected when changing Assembly
Parameter data. Each assigned solenoid coil driver has an associated Status Input
bit which can be used for diagnostic purposes. These bits are mapped as inputs
and must be considered when calculating Input Size (Rx).

G2-2 Series DeviceNet Technical Manual
I/O (Rx/Tx) Sizes
I/O (Rx/Tx) Size – Manifold
Outputs (Tx)
Outputs are defined as any valve solenoid coil and/or any output point from a discrete Output module. The
Output size (Tx) depends upon the physical configuration of the manifold as well as the Assembly Parameter
settings (see the following explanation of Assembly Parameter). Please reference the following pages for a
detailed explanation for calculating the Output size (Tx).
Inputs (Rx)
Inputs are defined as discrete (points from discrete Input modules) and internal (Status Input bits produced
by Output drivers). Thus the Input size (Rx) will include discrete input points, as well as, internal Inputs
(Status Input bits). Please reference the following pages for a detailed explanation for calculating the Input
size (Rx).
The overall size of the Input/Output (Rx/Tx) data for the manifold consists of the valve side size plus
Discrete I/O side size. In the G2-2 Series DeviceNet node, the Input/Output (Rx/Tx) size can vary from 1
to 40 bytes. Due to the many physical configuration possibilities of the G2-2 series, the worksheet on page 56
will allow accurate sizing of the Input/Output (Rx/Tx) byte requirements.
I/O (Rx/Tx) Size - Valve Side
The Rx/Tx size for the valve side of the manifold consists of an Output bit for each valve solenoid coil driver
and an Input bit for the corresponding Status Input bit. The value for the Valve Side Rx/Tx size is
determined by the (user configurable) Assembly Parameter, which is factory set to 4 (4 bytes).
Rx/Tx size for the Discrete I/O side is automatically configured based on the I/O modules installed. The
output (Tx) value will consist of an output bit for each output point. The input (Rx) value will consist of an
input bit for each input point and Status Input bits for corresponding outputs. Sinking (NPN) outputs will
return one Status bit for each output bit. Sourcing (PNP) outputs will return one Status bit for every four
output bits.
• The Assembly Parameter affects only the solenoid coil outputs on the valve side of the
manifold, and their associated Status Input bits.
• Sinking (NPN) output modules return one Status bit for each output bit.
• Sourcing (PNP) output modules return one Status bit for every four output bits.
When the required manifold Input/Output (Rx/Tx) byte sizes are incorrectly set in the DeviceNet
Configuration Software (i.e. RS NetWorx, DeviceNet Manager, etc.), the DeviceNet scanner will error. The
expected error code for this situation will be Error 77 – “Data Size Return Does Not Match Entry”.
Review your Rx/Tx size calculation to be sure they match the physical configuration of the manifold and the
valves entered in the programming software being used (see page 72 for more info).
Although the total Rx/Tx values must be declared in the DeviceNet Configuration
software for proper operation, specific values can be mapped in the scanner, if desired
(i.e. Status Input bits do not need to be mapped in the scanner if not being used with
program. In this case be sure not to use the “Automap” feature in the scanner) .

G2-2 Series DeviceNet Technical Manual
Bit Mapping Rules
The bit mapping for a G2-2 manifold varies with the physical configuration of the manifold and the Assembly
Parameter setting. The following is a breakdown of the bit mapping rules associated with the Numatics
valve manifold.
Valve Side
1. Solenoid coil outputs are distributed to the valve coils using the Z-Boards™.
2. The valve solenoid coil output portion for the total output bytes (Tx) is dependent only on the Assembly
Parameter setting (factory default is 4 bytes). Refer to page 59- 67 for examples.
3. Each solenoid coil output has an associated Status Input bit (refer to “Output Short Circuit Protection”
section page 21 for functional details). This will affect the overall input byte count (Rx).
4. Solenoid coil output addressing begins at the 1st sub base nearest the node using “14” coil 1st and then, if
applicable, the “12” coil, and continues in ascending order away from the communication node.
5. Each sub base is allocated 1 or 2 output bits, depending on the Z-Board ™ type installed. Single Z-Board ™
allocates 1 output bit, double Z-Board ™ allocate 2 output bits.
6. Z-Boards™ can be used in any arrangement (all singles, all doubles, or any combination) as long as
output group No.1 and output group No. 2 bits do not overlap (i.e. combinations of Z-Boards ™ could
exist where the physical configuration of the manifold could exceed the output capacity, see page 8).
Single solenoid valves can be used with double Z-BoardsTM . However, one of
the two available outputs will remain unused.

G2-2 Series DeviceNet Technical Manual
Discrete I/O Side
Outputs (Tx)
1) The discrete output byte size portion of Tx is self-configuring in byte increments, after an output
module is plugged into back plane, and power is applied.
2) Discrete output bits are mapped, in ascending order (away from the communication node), starting after
the highest valve side output bit, which is dependant upon the Assembly Parameter setting (see page
54).
3) All digital output modules have an associated internal Status Input bit, which will affect the total value of
input byte (Rx). Analog modules do not have an associated internal status input bit.
• Sinking (NPN) output modules allocate one internal Status Input bit per output point for every
output point.
• Sourcing (PNP) output modules allocate one internal Status Input bit per output point for every 4
output points.
4) Output bits are always configured in byte increments, thus output bits configured as a group of four will
always utilize a full byte (8 bits) when mapped. Although not used, the additional four bits in that byte
are reserved.
Inputs (Rx)
1) The discrete input byte size portion of Rx is self-configuring in byte increments, after an input module is
plugged into back plane, and power is applied.
2) Internal Status Input bits, associated with the valve side output drivers, are always mapped before any
physical input points. The quantity of these internal Status Input bits depends upon the Assembly
Parameter setting, see page 54.
3) Additional inputs (internal status or discrete) are mapped as follows:
• Sinking (NPN) digital output modules allocate one internal Status Input bit per output
point for every output points.
• Sourcing (PNP) digital output modules allocate one internal Status Input bit for every 4
output points.
• If SW2-7 is enabled, all diagnostic bits will not be mapped.
(ii) Discrete inputs are mapped (in byte increments, i.e. 4 Input module reserves 8 bits) in
ascending order following internal Status Input bits.
(b) Input Reporting – Alternate Setting (Note: only available with firmware Revision 2.7 or higher)
(DIP switch SW1-3 set to “ON” or User Configurable Parameter No. 14 Value =1)
(i) When using this user configurable parameter (see page 54); All internal Status Input bits
associated with any discrete output module are mapped in byte increments and in
ascending order following any existing physical or internal Status Input bits. Refer to pages
59-67 for sample I/O mapping.

Troubleshooting Continued – Error 77
When using an Allen Bradley controller, a frequent error that can occur is “Error 77”. “Error 77” is an I/O
Mismatch error, meaning that the DeviceNet scanner and Numatics DeviceNet manifold have different
Input and Output Sizes. These pages will describe how to resolve this issue.
1. First, find the Rx and Tx sizes of the manifold. In RsNetworx for DeviceNet, go online with your
Numatics manifold. Once online, double click on the icon for the Numatics valve manifold.
2. Click on the “Parameter” tab. Write down the byte values for Parameter ID 3 “Input Size Total (Rx)”
and Parameter ID 4 “Output Size Total (Tx)” . These are the I/O sizes for the Numatics DeviceNet
manifold.
3. Exit out of the Numatics G2-2 window. Double click on the DeviceNet scanner and go to the
“Scanlist” tab.

G2-2 Series DeviceNet Technical Manual
4. Left click on the node that needs to be configured, and left click on the “Edit I/O Parameters”
button.
5. Change the “Input Size” and “Output Size” to the numbers that you wrote down in Step 2. This will
fix the “Error 77” error code.
6. Left click on the “OK” button in the “Edit I/O Parameters” window. Left click “Apply” and then
“OK” in the Scanner module window and download the newly revised parameters.
