Why use Baker Oil Tools thru-tubing inflatables?
Baker Oil Tools is the recognized leader in the engineering and manufacture of inflatable products and systems.
Highly versatile thru-tubing inflatable tools can be set in a wide range of environments, including cased hole,
slotted pipe, perforations, screens, and open hole. The exceptional expansion and sealing capabilities of the
flexible elastomer element enable these tools to perform in many difficult conditions.
Thru-tubing inflatables have many advantages:
• Well interventions can be performed without pulling the completion.
• Thru-tubing inflatables are coiled tubing and wireline conveyed, eliminating the need for a workover rig.
• Negates the requirement for killing the well and risking formation damage.
• Time and cost savings.
• The longest proven track record.
• Proprietary tools and specialized designs combined with unsurpassed oilfield knowledge and experience allows
for a single systems approach.
We perform all research, development, and engineering in-house and manufacture all of our products in modern,
well-equipped, ISO 9001-certified facilities. We perform rigorous “Baker Performance Testing” in our state-of-
the-art Houston Test Lab.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does an inflatable tool differ from a conventional tool?

The significant difference between an inflatable tool and a more conventional tool is in it’s expansion characteris-
tics. Inflatable tools may have expansion ratios of up to 350%. This is what allows inflatable tools to be conveyed
into wells where either planned or unplanned restrictions exist and still create an effective seal below the restric-
tion. The flexibility of the inflatable element allows effective sealing in irregular or eccentric profiles such as open
hole, perforations, screens, and slotted liners where conventional packing elements have limited success.
Where are inflatable tools used?
Inflatable products and systems are used for drilling, production and workover operations that are outside the
limits of conventional packing elements. Applications include plugging and packing, testing, treating, straddling,
and squeezing.
What is the success of inflatable tools?
Success can be difficult to quantify. Although the operation of setting the inflatable may be successful, the client’s
objective may not always be achieved due to other external factors. Baker Oil Tools treats the use of inflatable
tools as an engineered service rather than the supply of a commodity. We strongly believe that success depends on
the following key factors: proper pre-job planning, gaining reliable well information, understanding the equipment
limitations, best-in-class system installation, and post job analysis. In recognizing this, BOT has put in place a
number of initiatives including a structured interface document, a problem-solving and risk-identification matrix,
and an engineering analysis software package, in order to maximize the chances of achieving success with inflat-
able tools.
Will the inflatable return to its original diameter when deflated to allow retrieval?
There may be a level of permanent deformation of the ribs on the element dependent on the expansion, internal
and differential pressures experienced by the tool and the length of time it has been in the well. However, due to
the slimline construction of the element and the fact that it contains fluid and is not solid elastomer, these ribs
can be collapsed back to their original diameter when passing through a restriction by following Baker Oil Tools’
retrieving procedures. The existence of deflation ports through the
bottom of the element as well as the top allows any trapped fluid to
be squeezed out during retrieval.
Can the inflatable be used as a long-term isolation barrier?
The longevity of an inflatable tool is very much dependent on the
status of the well in which the inflatable has been set. In a static
condition, such as a well suspension, inflatables have been known
to last for over ten years. In a flowing or injecting well, changes in
pressure and temperature around the inflatable may cause the inter-
nal inflation pressure to fluctuate resulting in a cycling of the ele-
ment. As this is almost impossible to quantify, it is recommended
that in non-static well bore conditions for longer term applications,
a minimum of 10 feet of cement be placed on top of the inflatable
bridge plug to guarantee the longevity of the isolation.
What is Baker Oil Tools’ level of experience with using thru-
tubing inflatables for addressing zone isolation and stimulation
applications?
Baker Oil Tools has completed over 6,000 jobs using its thru-
tubing inflatable products. Our innovative, Inflatable Straddle
Acidizing System (ISAP™), a multi-set straddle type system
has completed over 170 jobs worldwide. Our inflatable element
temperature and pressure ratings provide the largest operating
parameters in the industry. Recent initiatives include implementa-
tion of direct district input to BOT’s new InDEx (Interactive Data
Exchange) intranet driven data base system. Thru-Tubing Retrievable Bridge Plug Set in Casing
The perfect tool for your application
Baker Oil Tools has led the industry in thru-tubing inflatable technology since 1985 and still offers the industry’s
only complete thru-tubing product line. The exceptional expansion and sealing performance of BOT’s proprietary
elastomer sealing element technology allows our thru-tubing inflatable systems to operate reliably in conditions
outside the range of conventional packing elements or tools. The bottom line: BOT’s thru-tubing inflatables save
time and money while maximizing production.
