THE NATURAL WORLD

RIVER: a natural wide flow of fresh water across the land into the sea,
sea,
a lake,
lake, or another river
EXAMPLE: The Amazon River is the longest river in the world.
We enjoyed a peaceful walk along the riverbank.

CLIFF: a high area of rock with a very steep side, often on a coast
EXAMPLE: They built a house at the foot of a cliff.
The car skidded and plunged headlong over the cliff.

CAVE: a large hole in the side of a hill, cliff, or mountain, or one that is
underground
EXAMPLE: ·The echoes of his scream sounded in the cave for several
seconds.
·She was crushed in a freak accident in a cave in France.

SHORE: the land along the edge of a sea, lake, or wide river
EXAMPLE: ·We could hear waves crashing against the shore.
·The waves gently lapped the shore.

LAKE: a large area of water surrounded by land and not


connected to the sea except by rivers or streams
EXAMPLE: ·The hotel is in a lovely location overlooking the lake.
These plants are found in fresh water lakes and rivers

STREAM: water that flows naturally along a fixed route formed

by a channel cut into rock or ground, usually at ground level


EXAMPLE: ·The stream glinted in the moonlight.
·She hitched her skirt up before wading across the stream

VALLEY: an area of low land between hills or mountains, often


with a river running through it
EXAMPLE:

·The path descended steeply into the valley.
·A whole valley was drowned when the river was dammed

FOREST: a large area of land covered with trees and plants,


usually larger than a wood, or the trees and plants themselves
EXAMPLE:
·The campsite is set in the middle of a pine forest.
·They were campaigning against the destruction of the rain forest.
COAST: the land next to or close to the sea
EXAMPLE: ·The boat sailed down the coast.
·The ship lies off the coast of Spain.

WATERFALL: water, especially from a river or stream, dropping


from a higher to a lower point, sometimes from a great height
EXAMPLE: ·This tour takes in the area's best-known natural
features, including the Gullfoss waterfall.
·"Just look at that waterfall! Isn't it amazing?" she marvelled.
