.Problems for practice. (3-5 marks)

a. Calculate coulomb force between two alpha particles separated by a distance 3.2×10^(-15)m in air.

b. Calculate the distance between two protons such that the electrical repulsive force between them is equal to the
weight of either. Given mass of proton is 1.67×10^ (-27) kg and charge of proton is 1.6×10^(-19)C.

c. How many electrons should be removed from a coin of mass 1.6g, so that it may just float in an electric field intensity
10^ 9 N/C directed upward?

d. Calculate the electric field strength required to just support a water drop of mass 10^(-3) kg and having a charge
1.6×10^(-19)C.

e. Calculate the magnitude of electric field, which can just balance a deutron of mass 3.2× 10^(-27) kg. Take g=10m/s^2.

f. Two point charge of +16 micro coulomb and -9 micro coulomb are placed 8cm apart in air. Determine the position of
the point at which the resultant field is zero.

g. An electric dipole is formed by +4 micro coulomb and -4micro coulomb charges at 5mm distance. Calculate the dipole
moment and give it’s direction.

h. Calculate the number of electric lines of force originating from a charge of 1C.

i. A point charge of 17.7micro coulomb is located at the centre of cube of side 0.03m.Find the electric flux through each
face of the cube

J. A particle of mass 9× 10^(-5) g is kept over a large horizontal sheet of charge density 5×10^(-5) C/m^2 what charge
should be given to the particle, so that if released, it does not fall?

K. Determine the electric potential at the surface of a gold nucleus. The radius is 6.6×10^(-15) m and the atomic number
Z=79 .

l. The work done in moving a charge of 3C between two points is 6J.What is the potential difference between the two
points?

4. Long Answer type question ( 5 marks)

a. State Gauss's law. Using this law, obtain the expression for the electric field due to an infinitely long straight
conductor of linear charge density.

b. Find out the expression for the electric field due to uniformly charged spherical conducting shell of radius R at a point
(i) outside and (ii) inside the shell.

c. Find the expression for the electric field intensity and the electric potential, due to a dipole at a point on the
equatorial line.

5. To study the variation in potential drop with length of a wire for a steady current.( Roll no.20- 24)

6. To draw the diagram of a given open circuit comprising at least a battery,resistor/rheostat, key, ammeter and
voltmeter. Mark the components that are not connected in proper order and correct the circuit and also the
circuit diagram. (Roll No. 25-27)
Projects

1. To study various factors on which the internal resistance/EMF of a cell depends.( Roll 1-3)

2. To study the variations in current flowing in a circuit containing an LDR because of a variation in
(a) the power of the incandescent lamp, used to 'illuminate' the LDR (keeping all the lamps at a fixed distance).
(b) the distance of a incandescent lamp (of fixed power) used to 'illuminate' the LDR. ( Roll 4-7)

3. To find the refractive indices of (a) water (b) oil (transparent) using a plane mirror, an equiconvex lens (made
from a glass of known refractive index) and an adjustable object needle. (Roll 8-11)

4. To investigate the relation between the ratio of (i) output and input voltage and (ii) number of turns in the
secondary coil and primary coil of a self-designed transformer.(Roll 12-14)

5. To investigate the dependence of the angle of deviation on the angle of incidence using a hollow prism filled
one by one, with different transparent fluids. ( Roll 15 -18)

6. To estimate the charge induced on each one of the two identical Styrofoam (or pith) balls suspended in a
vertical plane by making use of Coulomb's law.( Roll 19 – 21)

7. To study the factor on which the self-inductance of a coil depends by observing the effect of this coil, when
put in series with a resistor/(bulb) in a circuit fed up by an A.C. source of adjustable frequency.( Roll 22 -24)

8. To study the earth's magnetic field using a compass needle -bar magnet by plotting magnetic field lines and
tangent galvanometer. (Roll 25 -27)
