• English uses three ways to express
actions in the past
– I have played
– I did play
– I played
• In French the past tense is only
expressed in one way but it can mean all
three things!

• IR Verbs are:
– Verbs that end in ir
– EXAMPLE: Finir
• To form the past participle of IR
verbs:
– Remove the IR and add I
– EXAMPLE: Finir -> fini
EXAMPLES OF
REGULAR IR VERBS
• J’ai fini =
– I have finished, I did finish, I finished
• Vous avez choisi =
– You chose, You did choose, You have
chosen
• Elle a réussi =
– She succeeded, She did succeed, She
has succeeded
NOTE
• THE PAST PARTICIPLE WITH
AVOIR DOES NOT CHANGE!
