Excuses excuses!

Activity One

Think of an excuse for not doing your homework.

Use the conditional tense, e.g. if and then.

If the dog hadn’t eaten my homework then I would have been

able to hand my homework in.

Read the words below and see if you can create some of your own excuses for not doing
your homework using the conditional tense if and then.

cat dog brother

Dad mum baby

sick toilet holiday

plane puddle illness

spillage lost stolen

dropped swapped garden

computer virus diary planner absent

Excuses excuses!
Activity Two

Write a letter to the head teacher explaining why you haven’t done your homework for
the past three weeks.

Try to use examples of the conditional tense.

Example:

Wadley Primary School 3 Pencil Street

Rainbow Avenue Desktown
Happyshire Schoolshire
AZ2 4GF AZ1 2DE

Monday 2nd July

Dear Mrs Ward,

I am writing to express my deepest apologies for not handing my homework for

three weeks!

I did not hand my homework in because I accidently tripped over a long chunky
worm and broke my arm and was unable to write a word. If Sarah hadn’t
distracted me by moaning about our unexpected maths test, then I would have
seen the worm and not tripped.

If the computer at home had not been broken then I can promise you that I would
have tried to do it on the computer. That is if I could ever persuade my sister to
get off and let me have a go!

Finally, if you are kind hearted enough to understand my predicament, then I

promise to ensure that next week’s homework is in on time.

Yours sincerely,

Katie Jones
