MCN LEC Naegel’s Rule – standard method used to

predict the length of pregnancy

Para – the number of pregnancies that
reached viability, regardless of whether the CONSTANT FORMULA based on LMP
infants were born alive or not
LMP – always determine the FIRST DAY
Gravida – a woman who is or has been of her LAST PERIOD
pregnant; determines the number of times
Estimating EDD based on Naegel’s Rule
the woman has been pregnant, including
present pregnancy. January – March (+9 +7) add 9 months and
7 days
Primigravida – a woman who is pregnant for
the first time April – December (-3 +7 +1) subtract 3
months then add 7 days and a year
Primipara – a woman who has given birth to
one child past age of viability Example:
Multigravida – a woman who has been 1.) The given LMP is August 8-13,2020
pregnant previously
8 8 20
Multipara – a woman who has carried two or
more pregnancies to viability -3 +7 +1

Nulligravida – a woman who has never been 5 15 21

and is not currently pregnant May 15, 2021
EDB – estimated date of birth 2.) The given LMP is March 24-29,2020
EDC – estimated date of confinement 3 24 2020
EDD – estimated date of delivery +9 +7
12 31 2020
December 31, 2020
Ovulation Age - measurement of life of fetus
from the time of ovulation or fertilization
Gestational Age (AOG) – measurement of
length of pregnancy from the first day of the
last menstrual period (LMP)
Estimating Gestational age or AOG Mc Donald’s Rule – estimating fetal growth
Determine LMP Measure the fundic height or FH using in
centimeters.
Determine the number of days from LMP to
the day of assessment FORMULA FOR LUNAR MONTHS
Divide the total number of days by 7 -MULTIPLY THE FUNDIC HEIGHT BY
TWO THEN DIVIDE BY SEVEN
Example:
FH (in cm) x 2 = AOG in lunar months
1) The given LMP was March 20-
7
25,2020 her visit was on July
28,2020. Example:
LMP: March 20-25 -What is the estimated gestational age in
months if the fundic height is 28 cm?
Determine how many days are there on
that particular month. Then subtract it Solution:
with the First day of her LMP
28 cm x 2 = 56 = 8 months
March 31 – 20 = 11 7 7
Then determine the number of days from FORMULA FOR WEEKS
LMP to the day of assessment
-Multiply fundic height by 8 then divide by
March - 11 days 7
April – 30 days Example:
May – 31 days -What is estimated gestational age in weeks
if fundic height is 35 cm?
June - 30 days
Solution:
July- 28 days
35 cm x 8 = 280 = 40 weeks
130 days
7 7
Then divide 130 into 7, (7 is part of the
Bartholomew’s Rule – determines and
formula)
estimates AOG by relative position of the
18.4 uterus in the abdominal cavity
7/130
3rd lunar month – fundus is palpable slightly
7__
above the symphysis pubis
60
56_ 5th lunar month – fundus is at the level of
umbilicus
4
9th lunar month – fundus is below the
18 weeks and 4 days.
xyphoid process
Haase’s Rule – determines length of the OB CLASSIFICATION
fetus in cm.
In determining the GTPALM remember
The length of the embryo in cm can be these:
calculated during the:
G – Number of pregnancies including the
-First 5 months of gestation by squaring present one
the number of the month of pregnancy
T – (PER HEAD COUNT) 37-42 WEEKS
-In the 6 – 9 month, multiply the
th th
P – (PER HEAD COUNT) 24-36 WEEKS
number of the month of pregnancy by 5
A – termination of pregnancy before 24
Example:
weeks
1.) A 3 month old fetus is approximately
A – (PER PREGNANCY COUNT NOT
9cm long.
HEAD) 1-23 WEEKS
2
3 =9 L – (PER HEAD COUNT) LIVING
(3)(3) = 9
M – (PER PRENANCY COUNT) Twins=1
2.) A 7 month old fetus is approximately 35
Triplets=1
cm long
Example:
7 x 5 = 35
A pregnant woman who had the following
past history – a boy born at 39 weeks
gestation, now alive and well, a girl born at
40 weeks gestation now alive and well, a girl
born at 33 weeks gestation now alive well.
G4 T2 P1 A0 L3 M0
G – 4 pregnancy including the present
T – 2 full terms 40 weeks and 39 weeks
P – 1 preterm 33 weeks
A – 0 abortions no termination happened
L – 3 living, 1 boy 2 girls
M – 0, no twins or triplets.
